Top Ten Ideas For Training Your Huntaway

All of us dream of training the perfect Huntaway, a pup that’s a CGC or canine good citizen and is well behaved and reliable at all times. Well dreams really do come true if the teaching is done with care and dedication. Don’t forget pups learn from day one and need to be informed what is correct, what is wrong, and effective interpersonal skills.
Pups act like young children, they need frequent direction and teaching. Training a pup need not be a challenge, all you need to keep in mind are a few straightforward guidelines:

Ten Tips For Training Your Huntaway

  1. Until your pup is trained, you must keep an eye on her at all times. If you are unable to then you must definitely cage her. Create a schedule for the pup, that will enable her to settle down quickly. The plan should consist of things such as regular potty visits, feeding times, sleep periods, walks, play time, instruction, etc. A pup that has a very busy day has no time at all for being bored and misbehave.
  2. Train the pup to heed you. Huntaways stay in packs and naturally need a leader. Once you establish your dominance in no uncertain terms then training will come easy as the pup will heed you at all times and not question your power.
  3. Use only positive training strategies. Never ever yell at, strike, or punish your Huntaway. It’s not only terrible but might cause behavioral problems. Using electrical shocks, prong collars, sprays, and so forth could quite possibly harm the animal.
  4. Teach the pup “nothing in life is free.” This is a mantra that is commonly accepted as a reliable training tool. If you reinforce this, your pup will learn that to experience something like affection, a stroll, or reward, he needs to act well.
  5. Teach the meaning of “No,” from the first day. Do not endorse actions such as jumping, yelping, tug-o-war, snarling, or escaping open gates and doorways. Commend courtesy and dismiss or leave when there is bad behavior. The pup will learn that if he is mischievous he will lose his companion/playmate.
  6. To fix a habit you must catch the Huntaway in the process and surprise him by shaking a canister of rocks. Once you have done this help him straighten out his behavior and instantly offer him a snack and approval. Huntaways do not remember what occurred earlier so chastening him after an event is useless.
  7. Make sure to call/use his name positively. Never say “Bad TOM,” or “No Tom,” this will cause mental confusion and the Huntaway will presume that if you call his name then it is for something negative. The doggie must relate his name with pleasant things like hugs, petting, walks, treats, and such. If this occurs he will respond happily if you call out his name.
  8. Develop a training routine that is short and sweet, about 10 minutes thrice a day. Extensive repeated sessions can be dull and the Huntaway is going to lose interest in the learning session. Help make lessons fun-filled and use trick training sessions to show orders like sit, down, come and so on.
  9. Bond with the Huntaway and both of you are going to get a kick out of your lessons. The pup ought to wait to spending quality time with you and not keep away from you by running away or hiding. Make certain to socialize the doggy as soon as possible. Socialization is among the most essential teachings. The Huntaway has to master how to exist with other animals, people, sounds, vehicles, and other activities. And so, carefully introduce the dog when he is small to common tasks and noises. Take him to the shopping center/ park, present him to kids and other pets, and make him unafraid of the vacuum and water hose.
  10. Learn all about crate training, leash walking, house breaking, along with food training. These are training 101 lessons that every Huntaway puppy has to learn. Understand all the idiosyncrasies in addition to distinctive features of the breed. This will give you valuable ideas on how to properly educate the dog.

As a Huntaway parent you have countless choices. You could very well decide to train the Huntaway on your own or sign up at a professional training school. Training a Huntaway has several steps: preschool, obedience training, dog sports, showing and conformation, as well as other facets like therapy dogs, hearing dogs, etc. What values you decide to teach depends upon you in addition to the learning abilities of your Huntaway. As you realize, different dogs, like people, have varied talents. Choose well and both you and your Huntaway pup will have exciting times together.
