Are you aiming to teach your Jagdterrier to sit? The technique of sitting up is effortlessly taught to compact dogs, however larger doggies are another story. It’s difficult for them to maintain their equilibrium.
Teach Your Jagdterrier to Sit: Foundation
Sitting is one of the 1st skills that you should teach to your Jagdterrier and lays the ground work for several other skills. To train a Jagdterrier to sit up, prepare some treats as a perk, and place the Jagdterrier on her haunches in the corner, to ensure she is unable to fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no space to lose balance.
Teach Your Jagdterrier to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Sound of The Words
Prevent her from pitching to the front by holding your hand beneath her chin and with your second hand dangle the treat above her nose. Keep saying intelligibly and distinctly, “sit up.” Do not make her sit up for too long at any one time, but repeat the instruction routinely and reward her regularly with lots of praise and treats.
Teach Your Jagdterrier to Sit: Help Her Stay Balanced
Throughout the initial lesson your Jagdterrier will call for significant help from your hand to keep her from falling forward, but as she gains better control of the balancing muscles and recognizes what you want her to do, she’ll count less on your hand to keep her steady. Gradually, you can give her less support until you will simply have to keep one hand in position two or three inches from her chin or neck, to be waiting to stop her falling forward; in the future you might remove this hand entirely and just simply hold the reward just over the height of her head.
Teach Your Jagdterrier To Sit: Remove the Assistance Incrementally
With frequent practice she will sit up well after you command her. Afterward she should be set against a wall, so as to offer her support for her back only. After she has learned this and can maintain her place easily, practice with her using chair legs, pillows or other items that give her less and less help and support. Gradually she will be trained to maintain her stability and sit without having anything to lean against.
Teach Your Jagdterrier to Sit: Putting It All Together
Throughout all this training the phrase "sit up" will have been impressed upon her subconscious through regular repetition. Last here's the final lesson to teach your Jagdterrier to sit up as quickly as she hears the words. Chances are, if she has been diligently instructed, you will just have to summon her out in the room, show to her a reward, hold it up a reasonable distance from the floor, say "sit" and she will do so. Then you give her the snack while still in position.
The only requirement for flawlessness is to practice with her several times a day until she can sit when commanded to and without being shown a snack; give her the treats only after she has followed the order.
Teach Your Jagdterrier Other Tricks
You have now the groundwork for teaching your Jagdterrier many other skills. She can now learn to beg by waving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she'll move in rhythm with yours. She can also learn to salute by bringing one paw to the side of her head, or to keep a toy in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothing.
In instructing a Jagdterrier to submit to being dressed up, do not try to get her to wear too many things simultaneously. Try at first with just a hat. Only after she gets adjusted to that you could put on a coat and incrementally introduce her to the other clothing.
