Are you struggling to teach your Montenegrin Mountain Hound to sit? The technique of sitting up is easily taught to pocket-sized dogs, but much bigger pooches are a different story. It is challenging for them to keep their balance.

Teach Your Montenegrin Mountain Hound to Sit: Prep work

Sitting is one of the very first skills that should be taught to your Montenegrin Mountain Hound and forms the groundwork for a large number of other tricks. To train a Montenegrin Mountain Hound to sit up, prepare some treats as a reward, and set your Montenegrin Mountain Hound on her butt in the corner, so she will not fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.

Teach Your Montenegrin Mountain Hound to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Words

Keep her from falling to the front by securing 1 hand underneath her chin and with the second hand hold her reward above her nose. Keep saying deliberately and distinctly, “sit up.” Don’t make her sit up for too long at any one time, however repeat the instruction routinely and reward her often with a lot of approval and treats.

Teach Your Montenegrin Mountain Hound to Sit: Help Her Balance

Throughout her 1st lesson your Montenegrin Mountain Hound will need significant help and support from your hand to keep her from tumbling forward, but as she gains more control of her stabilizing muscles and starts to learn what you want her to do, she will depend less and less on your hand to keep her steady. Gradually, you can give your Montenegrin Mountain Hound less help and support till you’ll only have to maintain one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be in place to stop her from falling forward; eventually you will be able to withdraw your hand altogether and merely hold the snack just above the height of your Montenegrin Mountain Hound’s face.

Teach Your Montenegrin Mountain Hound To Sit: Remove the Help Slowly And Gradually

After regular training your Montenegrin Mountain Hound will sit up long after you command her. Afterward she should be set up against your wall, so as to give her a support for her back only. Once she has mastered this and can maintain her place effortlessly, practice with her against chair legs, cushions or other objects that offer her less and less support. Sooner or later she will learn how to maintain her stability and sit up without having something to rest against.




Teach Your Montenegrin Mountain Hound to Sit: Putting It All Together

In the course of all this training the command "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her mind through regular repetition. Lastly here's the final lesson to teach your Montenegrin Mountain Hound to sit up right after she hears the command. Most likely, if she has been carefully trained, you will just have to get her out in the room, show her a reward, hold it up a suitable distance from the ground, say "sit up or sit" and she'll obey. Then just give her the treat while still in place.

The only condition for excellence is to rehearse with her multiple times daily until she sits on command and without being shown a reward; give her the treats only after she has adhered to the command.

Teach Your Montenegrin Mountain Hound Other Tricks

You have now the groundwork for teaching your Montenegrin Mountain Hound many other tricks. She can now be taught to beg by waving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she'll move in coordination with yours. She can also learn to salute by bringing one paw up to the side of her head, or to keep a wooden pipe in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothes.

While training a Montenegrin Mountain Hound to submit to being dressed up, don't try to get her to wear too many items simultaneously. Try her at first with just a hat. Only after she becomes adjusted to that you could put on a coat and progressively introduce her to the other garments.
