Training Your Chien-Gris To Sit

Teach Your Chien-Gris to Sit

Are you aspiring to teach your Chien-Gris to sit? The technique of sitting up is easily taught to smaller dogs, yet larger pooches are another story. It is tricky for them to sustain their balance.

Teach Your Chien-Gris to Sit: Prep work

Sitting is one of the first skills that should be taught to your Chien-Gris and forms the foundation for plenty of other techniques. In order to train a Chien-Gris to sit up, organize some snacks as a reward, and put your Chien-Gris on her rump in the corner, to ensure she can not fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no space to stumble.

Teach Your Chien-Gris to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Words

Prevent her from pitching to the front by holding your hand on her chin and using the second hand hold her reward above your Chien-Gris’s nose. Keep repeating intelligibly and distinctly, “sit.” Don’t make her sit up for too long at one time, but repeat the training routinely and reward her regularly with loads of praise and treats.

Teach Your Chien-Gris to Sit: Help Her Stay Balanced

In her initial lesson your Chien-Gris will demand a lot of assistance from your hand to stop her from pitching forward, but as she gains better control of the balancing muscles and comprehends what you want, she’ll depend less and less upon your hand to hold her steady. Then you can gradually give your Chien-Gris less help up until you will basically have to keep one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be waiting to stop her from falling forward; eventually you can easily withdraw this hand altogether and just hold the reward just above the height of her face.

Teach Your Chien-Gris To Sit: Remove the Help Slowly

After constant training she will sit up for a long time after you set her up. The next step is she should be set up against the wall, so as to give her a support for her back only. When she has learned this and can keep her position effortlessly, rehearse with her against chair legs, cushions or other things that provide her less and less support. In time she will learn to keep her balance and sit without something to lean on.

Teach Your Chien-Gris to Sit: Putting It All Together

Throughout all this training the phrase "sit up" will have been instilled upon her mind through constant repetition. Last here's the final lesson to teach your Chien-Gris to sit up right after she hears the phrase. Chances are, if she has been properly taught, you will only have to call her out into the room, show to her a reward, hold it up a reasonable distance from the floor, say "sit" and she'll do so. Then just give her the reward while still in position.

The only prerequisite for flawlessness is to rehearse with her multiple times daily until she can sit on command and without being shown a snack; give her the snacks only after she has complied with the command.

Teach Your Chien-Gris Other Tricks

You have now the method for teaching your Chien-Gris many other skills. She can now learn how to beg by waving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she'll move in conjunction with yours. She can also learn to salute by moving one paw to the side of her head, or to hold an object in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothing.

While instructing a Chien-Gris to tolerate being clothed, don't try to get her to wear too many things at the same time. Try her at first with a hat. Only after she becomes familiar with that you can put on a coat and gradually over time introduce her to the other garments.
