Are you aspiring to teach your Border Terrier to sit? The talent of sitting up is quickly taught to petite dogs, however larger dogs are another story. It’s difficult for them to maintain their equilibrium.

Teach Your Border Terrier to Sit: Planning

Sitting up is one of the initial techniques that you should teach to a Border Terrier and provides the foundation for many other tricks. To train a Border Terrier to sit up, prep some snacks as a reward, and set the Border Terrier on her haunches in the corner, to ensure that she will not fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no space to stumble.

Teach Your Border Terrier to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Sound of The Words

Prevent her from pitching forward by keeping 1 hand underneath her chin and using the second hand dangle her reward above her face. Keep saying intelligibly and distinctly, “sit up.” Do not make her sit up too long at one time, however repeat the lesson regularly and reward her frequently with loads of recognition and snacks.

Teach Your Border Terrier to Sit: Help Her Maintain Balance

During her first lesson your Border Terrier will call for significant help and support from your hand to prevent her from pitching forward, but as she gets control of the balancing muscles and realizes what you want her to do, she will rely less on your hand to hold her in position. Gradually, you can give your Border Terrier less assistance until you’ll just have to keep one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be prepared to prevent her from falling forward; eventually you can easily withdraw the hand entirely and merely hold the treat right over the level of your Border Terrier’s face.

Teach Your Border Terrier To Sit: Remove the Help Slowly

After steady practice your Border Terrier will stay seated for a long time after you tell her to. Afterward she should be set up against the wall, so as to offer her help for her back only. When she has understood this and can keep her position effortlessly, practice with her up against chair legs, cushions or other items that offer her less and less help. Ultimately she will get the hang of how to keep her equilibrium and sit up without something to rest on.




Teach Your Border Terrier to Sit: Putting It All Together

During the course of all this training the words "sit up" will have been instilled upon her mind by constant repetition. Lastly is the final lesson to teach your Border Terrier to sit up whenever she hears the command. It's highly likely, if she has been properly taught, you will simply have to summon her out in the room, display to her a snack, hold it up a suitable distance from the ground, say "sit up" and she'll obey. Then you'll just give her the treat while still in place.

The only condition for perfection is to rehearse with your Border Terrier several times a day until she will sit up when commanded to and without being shown a treat; give her the treats only once she has followed the command.

Teach Your Border Terrier Other Tricks

You have now the technique for teaching your Border Terrier many other skills. She can now be taught to beg by waving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she will move in sync with yours. She can also learn to salute by moving one paw up to the side of her head, or to keep a wooden pipe in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothing.

While instructing a Border Terrier to submit to being dressed up, don't try to get her to wear too many items at the same time. Try at first with just a cap. Once she becomes accustomed to that you can put on a jacket and over time introduce her to the other clothes.
