Are you attempting to teach your Picardy Spaniel to sit? The talent of sitting up is quickly taught to small dogs, though bigger dogs are a different story. It’s tricky for them to keep their equilibrium.

Teach Your Picardy Spaniel to Sit: Preparation

Sitting is one of the 1st techniques that should be taught to a Picardy Spaniel and forms the groundwork for several other skills. To train a Picardy Spaniel to sit up, prep some treats as a reward, and put the Picardy Spaniel on her rump in a corner, to make sure that she can not fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.

Teach Your Picardy Spaniel to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Sound of The Words

Keep her from falling towards you by sticking one hand underneath her chin and with the other hand dangle the snack above the Picardy Spaniel’s face. Keep repeating intelligibly and clearly, “sit.” Don’t make her sit too long at one time, however repeat the instruction frequently and reward her frequently with lots of recognition and treats.

Teach Your Picardy Spaniel to Sit: Help Her Maintain Balance

During the first lesson she will need a surprising amount of help from you to keep her from falling forward, but as she gains better control of the stabilizing muscles and starts to learn what you want, she’ll count less upon your hand to keep her steady. Then you can gradually give your Picardy Spaniel less help and support until you will merely have to leave one hand in position two or three inches from her chin or neck, to be waiting to prevent her from falling forward; later you can take away your hand and just simply hold the snack right above the height of your Picardy Spaniel’s head.

With constant practice your Picardy Spaniel will sit up long after you make her. The next step is she should be set up against a wall, so as to provide her support for her back. Soon after she has soaked up this and can hold her posture easily, practice with her up against chair legs, pillows or other items that offer her less and less aid. Gradually she will be able to keep her equilibrium and sit without anything to lean against.




Teach Your Picardy Spaniel to Sit: Putting It All Together

During the course of all this training the phrase "sit up" will have been impressed upon her subconscious by regular repetition. Last comes the final training to teach your Picardy Spaniel to sit up immediately after she hears the phrase. Most likely, if she has been diligently trained, you will simply have to get her out into the room, reveal to her a treat, hold it up a reasonable distance from the floor, say "sit" and she will do so. Then give her the snack while still in place.

The only prerequisite for flawlessness is to rehearse with her several times daily until she sits on command and without being shown a snack; give her the rewards only once she has complied with the command.

Teach Your Picardy Spaniel Other Tricks

You have now the foundation for teaching your Picardy Spaniel many other skills. She now can learn how to beg by waving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she'll move in conjunction with yours. She also can be taught to salute by bringing one paw up to the side of her head, or to hold something in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothing.

While instructing a Picardy Spaniel to tolerate being dressed up, do not try to make her wear too many items simultaneously. Try her at first with just a hat. Once she gets used to that you could put on a coat and slowly introduce her to the other garments.
