Teach Your Basset Hound to Sit

Are you aspiring to teach your Basset Hound to sit? The technique of sitting up is quite easily taught to very small dogs, though much larger doggies are another story. It’s tough for them to maintain their balance.

Teach Your Basset Hound to Sit: Preparation

Sitting is one of the fundamental tricks that you should teach to a Basset Hound and lays the ground work for a number of other techniques. To train a Basset Hound to sit up, prep some snacks as a reward, and place the Basset Hound on her haunches in the corner, so that she is not able to fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.

Teach Your Basset Hound to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Phrase

Keep her from tilting towards you by sticking one hand beneath her chin and with your other hand dangle her snack above her face. Keep saying intelligibly and distinctly, “sit up.” Don’t make her sit for too long at any one time, but repeat the training regularly and reward her often with plenty of adoration and snacks.

Teach Your Basset Hound to Sit: Help Her Maintain Balance

Throughout the first lesson she will demand a lot of support from you to prevent her from falling forward, but as she gets control of her stabilizing muscles and recognizes what you want her to do, she’ll depend less and less on your hand to hold her in position. Then you can gradually give her less assistance up until you’ll just have to keep one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be prepared to stop her from falling forward; later on you can take away the hand completely and simply dangle the snack right over the level of her head.

Teach Your Basset Hound To Sit: Remove the Help Incrementally

After steady training she will sit up for a good while after you get her to sit. Afterward she should be set up against your wall, so as to provide her a support for her back. When she has picked up this and can maintain her place effortlessly, rehearse with her up against chair legs, pillows or other things that give her less and less help. Gradually she will master how to keep her stability and sit up without having something to rest against.




Teach Your Basset Hound to Sit: Putting It All Together

Throughout all these lessons the phrase "sit up" will have been impressed upon her psyche through persistent repetition. Lastly comes the final lesson to teach your Basset Hound to sit up right after she hears the words. It's highly likely, if she has been diligently instructed, you will simply have to get her out into the room, show her a snack, hold it up a suitable distance from the ground, say "sit up or sit" and she'll do so. Then you'll give her the treat while still in position.

The only condition for perfection is to practice with your Basset Hound several times daily until she sits on command and without being shown a treat; give her the snacks only once she has followed the order.

Teach Your Basset Hound Other Tricks

You have now the method for teaching your Basset Hound many other tricks. She can now learn to beg by waving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she'll move in rhythm with yours. She can also be taught to salute by bringing one paw up to the side of her head, or to keep an object in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothing.

In training a Basset Hound to tolerate being dressed up, do not try to make her wear too many items at once. Try at first with just a cap. Soon after she becomes used to that you can put on a jacket and progressively introduce her to more garments.
