Are you struggling to teach your North Country Beagle to sit? The talent of sitting up is quickly taught to smaller dogs, yet larger doggies are another story. It is challenging for them to maintain their equilibrium.
Teach Your North Country Beagle to Sit: Foundation
Sitting is one of the initial tricks that you should teach to your North Country Beagle and lays the foundation for several other tricks. To train a North Country Beagle to sit up, prep some snacks as a reward, and place the North Country Beagle on her backside in the corner, so she can not fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no space to lose balance.
Teach Your North Country Beagle to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Sound of The Words
Protect her from tilting to the front by maintaining your hand on her chin and with the second hand dangle the snack above her nose. Keep saying deliberately and distinctly, “sit up.” Do not force her to sit up for too long at any one time, however repeat the instruction often and reward her often with loads of appreciation and snacks.
Teach Your North Country Beagle to Sit: Help Her Balance
Throughout her very first lesson she will call for quite a bit of support from you to keep her from pitching forward, but as she gets better control of the muscles and realises what you want, she will depend less upon your hand to hold her steady. Gradually, you can give your North Country Beagle less assistance till you’ll merely have to maintain one hand in position two or three inches from her chin or neck, to be ready to stop her from falling forward; later on you may withdraw the hand entirely and merely suspend the treat just over the height of her face.
Teach Your North Country Beagle To Sit: Remove the Aids Slowly And Gradually
After frequent training she will sit up well after you get her to sit. Then she should be set against your wall, so as to give her assistance for her back only. Once she has understood this and can hold her position effortlessly, practice with her using chair legs, pillows or other objects that provide her less and less help and support. Ultimately she will understand how to preserve her equilibrium and sit without needing something to lean on.
Teach Your North Country Beagle to Sit: Putting It All Together
During all these lessons the phrase "sit up" will have been impressed upon her psyche by regular repetition. Last is the final training to teach your North Country Beagle to sit up immediately after she hears the words. It's highly likely, if she has been carefully taught, you will merely have to get her out in the room, show her a reward, hold it up a suitable distance from the ground, say "sit up or sit" and she will do so. Then give her the treat while still in place.
The only necessity for perfection is to practice with her several times daily until she sits up on command and without being shown a reward; give her the treats only once she has adhered to the order.
Teach Your North Country Beagle Other Tricks
You have now the technique for teaching your North Country Beagle many other tricks. She can now be taught how to beg by moving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she'll move in sync with yours. She also can be taught to salute by moving one paw up to the side of her head, or to hold a toy in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothes.
While training a North Country Beagle to submit to being dressed up, do not try to get her to wear too many items at the same time. Try at first with just a cap. Soon after she gets adjusted to that you can put on a coat and eventually introduce her to more garments.
