Tips For Teaching Your Cretan Hound To Sit

Teach Your Cretan Hound to Sit

Are you aspiring to teach your Cretan Hound to sit? The skill of sitting up is effortlessly taught to very small dogs, but much bigger pooches are a different story. It’s tough for them to keep their equilibrium.

Teach Your Cretan Hound to Sit: Preparing

Sitting up is one of the 1st techniques that should be taught to your Cretan Hound and forms the foundation for quite a few other skills. In order to train a Cretan Hound to sit up, put together some snacks as a reward, and put the Cretan Hound on her butt in a corner, to ensure she is not able to fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no room to stumble.

Teach Your Cretan Hound to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Words

Protect her from pitching towards you by securing one hand on her chin and with your other hand dangle her treat above the Cretan Hound’s nose. Keep repeating clearly and deliberately, “sit.” Do not make her sit too long at any one time, but do repeat the training routinely and reward her often with plenty of kudos and snacks.

Teach Your Cretan Hound to Sit: Help Her Stay Balanced

During her beginner lesson your Cretan Hound will require quite a bit of help and support from your hand to keep her from falling forward, but as she gains better control of her balancing muscles and recognizes what you want her to do, she will rely less and less upon your hand to hold her steady. Gradually, you can give her less help til you’ll basically have to maintain one hand in position two or three inches from her chin or neck, to be prepared to prevent her from falling forward; later on you might withdraw the hand and merely hold the reward just above the height of your Cretan Hound’s head.

Teach Your Cretan Hound To Sit: Remove the Aids Gradually Over Time

After frequent training she will sit up well after you set her up. Next she should be set against a wall, so as to provide her a support for her back only. Only after she has picked up this and can maintain her place easily, rehearse with her using chair legs, cushions or other things that give her less and less support. Ultimately she will grasp how to keep her equilibrium and sit without needing something to rest against.

Teach Your Cretan Hound to Sit: Putting It All Together

During the course of all these lessons the command "sit up" will have been instilled upon her subconscious through frequent repetition. Lastly is the final lesson to teach your Cretan Hound to sit up as quickly as she hears the command. There's a good chance, if she has been diligently trained, you will merely have to call her out into the room, show a reward, hold it up a reasonable distance from the ground, say "sit up" and she'll do so. Then you'll just give her the snack while still in position.

The only necessity for perfection is to train with her several times a day until she will sit when told and without being shown a snack; give her the treats only after she has followed the order.

Teach Your Cretan Hound Other Tricks

You have now the technique for teaching your Cretan Hound many other tricks. She now can be taught to beg by waving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she'll move in coordination with yours. She can also learn to salute by bringing one paw to the side of her head, or to hold an object in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothing.

In instructing a Cretan Hound to tolerate being clothed, do not try to get her to wear too many garments simultaneously. Try at first with a hat. Only after she gets familiar with that you could put on a coat and little by little introduce her to the other garments.
