Tips For Teaching Your Ariegeois To Sit

Teach Your Ariegeois to Sit

Are you working to teach your Ariegeois to sit? The skill of sitting up is easily taught to smaller dogs, but much bigger doggies are another story. It’s tricky for them to maintain their equilibrium.

Teach Your Ariegeois to Sit: Readiness

Sitting up is one of the initial skills that should be taught to a Ariegeois and provides the groundwork for quite a few other skills. To train a Ariegeois to sit up, put together some snacks as a perk, and set your Ariegeois on her backside in a corner, so she can not fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to stumble.

Teach Your Ariegeois to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Words

Keep her from pitching forward by holding your hand under her chin and with the second hand dangle the reward above your Ariegeois’s nose. Keep saying distinctly and intelligibly, “sit.” Do not make her sit up for too long at one time, but do repeat the instruction often and reward her regularly with lots of kudos and snacks.

Teach Your Ariegeois to Sit: Help Her Balance

Throughout her initial lesson she will call for quite a bit of help from your hand to prevent her from falling forward, but as she gets control of her muscles and is aware of what you want, she’ll count less on your hand to hold her steady. Then you can gradually give your Ariegeois less support until you’ll just have to maintain one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be waiting to stop her from falling forward; later you can withdraw your hand entirely and just simply suspend the treat right above the height of your Ariegeois’s head.

Teach Your Ariegeois To Sit: Remove the Aids Gradually Over Time

With steady training your Ariegeois will sit up for a good while after you get her to sit. Afterward she should be set up against a wall, so as to give her a support for her back. Soon after she has gotten the hang of this and can hold her position easily, rehearse with her using chair legs, pillows or other things that provide her less and less help. At some point she will figure out how to preserve her balance and sit without needing something to lean against.

Teach Your Ariegeois to Sit: Putting It All Together

During all this training the words "sit up" will have been impressed upon her psyche by means of regular repetition. Lastly is the final training to teach your Ariegeois to sit up whenever she hears the phrase. It's highly likely, if she has been diligently trained, you will just have to summon her out into the room, show a reward, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit" and she'll obey. Then you give her the reward while still in place.

The only condition for flawlessness is to practice with her several times a day until she sits up on command and without being shown a snack; give her the snacks only once she has obeyed the order.

Teach Your Ariegeois Other Tricks

You have now the foundation for teaching your Ariegeois many other tricks. She can now be taught how to beg by waving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she'll move in coordination with yours. She also can learn to salute by bringing one paw up to the side of her head, or to hold an object in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothing.

When training a Ariegeois to tolerate being clothed, do not try to make her wear too many items simultaneously. Try at first with just a cap. Only after she becomes used to that you can put on a jacket and progressively introduce her to more clothing.

Delight in "teaching your Ariegeois the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun at the same time!
