Ten Tips For Training The Akita Inu

All of us dream of training the perfect Akita Inu, a pup that’s a CGC or canine good citizen and is well mannered and responsible at all times. Well dreams do come true if the training is done with kindness and focus. Never forget pups learn from day one and need to be instructed what is correct, what is wrong, and appropriate socialization.
Pups are just like kids, they have to have regular supervision and training. Training a pup needn’t be a chore, all you have to consider are a few simple principles:

10 Tips For Training Your Akita Inu

  1. Till your pup learns, you want to keep an eye on her at all times. When you can not then you will need to cage her. Make a routine for the pup, that will serve to help her to calm down fast. The calendar needs to consist of things such as hourly bathroom breaks, eating times, relaxation periods, strolls, play time, training, etc. A pup that has a hectic day has no time to get bored or misbehave.
  2. Train the pup to heed you. Akita Inus stay in packs and instinctively adhere to a leader. Once you establish your leadership in no uncertain terms then instructing will come easy as the pup will obey you at all times and not defy your authority.
  3. Utilize exclusively constructive training tactics. Don’t scream at, strike, or abuse your Akita Inu. It’s not only harsh but can result in behavioral concerns. Use of electric shocks, prong collars, sprays, etc can wound the animal.
  4. Show the pup “absolutely nothing in life is free.” This is a philosophy that is widely accepted as a practical teaching method. As you emphasize this, the pup will learn that to experience something like love, a stroll, or reward, he must act properly.
  5. Present the meaning of “No,” from day one. Do not reinforce behaviors like jumping, yelping, tug-o-war, yipping, or escaping open gates and doors. Applaud courtesy and just ignore or walk away when there is bad behavior. The pup will learn that if he is mischievous he will lose his companion/playmate.
  6. To improve a behavior you should catch the Akita Inu in the act and startle her by shaking a can of rocks. Once you have done this make him straighten out his behavior and immediately offer him a snack and appreciation. Akita Inus do not remember what transpired earlier so reprimanding him after an occurrence is futile.
  7. Make sure to call/use his name positively. Never ever say “Bad TOM,” or “No Tom,” this will result in confusion and the Akita Inu will believe that if you call his name then it is something negative. The pup must connect his name with pleasant events like hugs, petting, walks, food, and such. If this happens he will come willingly anytime you call out his name.
  8. Establish a coaching regimen that is short and sweet, say 10 minutes thrice a day. Long recurring trainings can be uninteresting and the Akita Inu will lose interest in learning. Make training fun and use trick training sessions to demonstrate directions like sit, down, come and so on.
  9. Connect with the Akita Inu and both of you are going to enjoy your lessons. The pup needs to expect spending quality time with you and not stay clear of you by turning tail or hiding. Make sure to socialize the doggie early on. Socialization is one of the most vital teachings. The Akita Inu will need to learn to coexist with other animals, people, sounds, vehicles, and other activities. So, slowly and gradually introduce the puppy when he is little to normal tasks and noises. Take him to the shopping center/ playground, introduce him to kids and other animals, and make him unfrightened of the vacuum cleaner and garden hose.
  10. Master all about potty training, leash walking, house breaking, together with food training. These are basic lessons that every Akita Inu puppy must grasp. Know about all the traits as well as qualities of the breed. This will give you important ideas on how to properly teach the puppy dog.

As a Akita Inu parent you have lots of choices. You could very well choose to train the Akita Inu yourself or enlist at a qualified training school. Training a Akita Inu has many levels: preschool, obedience training, doggie sports, presenting and conformation, as well as other components like therapy dogs, hearing dogs, et cetera. What level you choose to train is dependent on you along with the learning abilities of your Akita Inu. As you recognize, different dogs, like people, have different talents. Choose wisely and both you and your Akita Inu pup will have enjoyable times together.
