How To Teach Your Maltese To Sit

Teach Your Maltese to Sit

Are you making an attempt to teach your Maltese to sit? The skill of sitting up is easily taught to small dogs, but bigger doggies are another story. It’s difficult for them to maintain their balance.

Teach Your Maltese to Sit: Groundwork

Sitting is one of the most basic techniques that you should teach to your Maltese and forms the ground work for several other tricks. To train a Maltese to sit up, prepare some snacks as a perk, and put the Maltese on her butt in the corner, so she can’t fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to stumble.

Teach Your Maltese to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Words

Prevent her from falling towards you by sticking 1 hand beneath her chin and using the second hand hold the reward above her face. Keep saying clearly and intelligibly, “sit up.” Don’t force her to sit for too long at one time, but do repeat the training routinely and reward her frequently with plenty of appreciation and treats.

Teach Your Maltese to Sit: Help Her Keep Her Balance

Throughout her very first lesson your Maltese will require quite a bit of assistance from your hand to keep her from tumbling forward, but as she gets better control of the stabilizing muscles and starts to learn what you want her to do, she’ll count less on your hand to hold her in position. Gradually, you can give your Maltese less assistance til you will merely have to leave one hand in position two or three inches from her neck or chin, to be ready to stop her from falling forward; in the future you can take away the hand entirely and merely dangle the reward right over the level of her face.

Teach Your Maltese To Sit: Remove the Assistance Incrementally

After frequent training your Maltese will stay seated long after you command her. The next step is she should be set up against your wall, so as to offer her a support for her back. Once she has gotten the hang of this and can maintain her posture easily, rehearse with her using chair legs, cushions or other objects that give her less and less help. Subsequently she will be trained to preserve her stability and sit without having something to lean against.

Teach Your Maltese to Sit: Putting It All Together

Throughout all this training the words "sit up" will have been instilled upon her subconscious by means of regular repetition. Last here's the final training to teach your Maltese to sit up right after she hears the phrase. There's a good chance, if she has been diligently instructed, you will simply have to summon her out into the room, show a snack, hold it up a reasonable distance from the floor, say "sit up or sit" and she will obey. Then just give her the treat while still in position.

The only necessity for excellence is to train with her several times daily until she will sit up when commanded to and without being shown a snack; give her the rewards only once she has followed the direction.

Teach Your Maltese Other Tricks

You have now the basis for teaching your Maltese many other skills. She now can be taught how to beg by moving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she'll move in rhythm with yours. She also can learn to salute by moving one paw to the side of her head, or to hold a wooden pipe in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other articles of clothing.

In teaching a Maltese to accept being clothed, do not try to make her wear too many items at one time. Try her at first with a hat. Soon after she gets adjusted to that you could put on a jacket and little by little introduce her to more clothes.

Get a kick out of "teaching your Maltese the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun at the same time!
