To teach your Norfolk Spaniel tricks, even simple ones, you need to get hold of some of his favorite snacks, go to a quiet suitable location and hold the learning sessions to under 15 minutes or your Norfolk Spaniel will begin to get tired. Remember when he gets something right offer him lots of praise and a reward snack, but take care not to get him too ecstatic or he will lose concentration.
Teach your Norfolk Spaniel to give you his paw
To train your Norfolk Spaniel to give you his paw, first get him to sit, then as you state the word ‘paw’ take his paw in your hand and offer him a treat. Then do it again, and after a few tries don’t take his paw so quickly. State the word ‘paw’, count to one and then take it. You need to discover that he is raising his paw up as you say the word. If he doesn’t then go back to saying it at the exact same time. Do it a few more times then slow your response again. After two or three sessions most Norfolk Spaniels pick this trick up quite easily.
Teach your Norfolk Spaniel to offer you a high five
Like a great deal of tricks the high five is a continuation of an earlier trick, in this case the paw trick. Place a treat in between your two fingers and lift your hand a little bit higher than you would for the paw trick. Your Norfolk Spaniel will presume you desire to perform the paw trick and will grab for the snack with his paw as we instructed him in the prior trick. As he reaches up you say “high five” and offer him the treat. As soon as your Norfolk Spaniel has mastered the paw trick this 1 should be extremely easy to master and with just a few sessions he will be performing it on hand signal instead of vocal commands.
Teach your Norfolk Spaniel to leap through a hoop
Before you begin this one I would simply like to ask you to be a little practical and not suspend the hoop higher than necessary as you do not really want your Norfolk Spaniel to injure himself while doing the trick. Place your Norfolk Spaniel to 1 side of a hula hoop, get him to take notice of your hand on the other side of the hoop. Place a treat in your hand and offer the Norfolk Spaniel the command to stop sitting. In the beginning he might try to go around or underneath the hoop. When this happens begin again. Your Norfolk Spaniel desires the snack and will quickly learn that going around or under doesn’t work so he will soon begin going through it. The instant he does, say “hoop” and offer him the snack. He will quickly be leaping through the hoop upon the command of “hoop”. When I began teaching this trick I had a medium sized dog, so I started with the hoop six inches from the floor and gradually brought it to waist high. On the occasion that you have a smaller sized dog you might wish to begin with the hoop on the floor so he simply goes through the hoop and after that gradually lift it more once he gets accustomed to the trick.
I expect you have enjoyed learning these 3 tricks you can teach your Norfolk Spaniel. Have patience with your Norfolk Spaniel and above all, have fun!
