To teach your Molossus tricks, even easy ones, you need to have some small snacks, go to a secluded suitable place and manage to keep the coaching sessions to under 15 minutes or your Molossus will start to get tired. Remember when he gets something right give him lots of appreciation and a reward treat, however beware not to get him too excited or he might lose focus.
Teach your Molossus to offer you his paw
To train your Molossus to give you his paw, initially get him to sit, then as you say the word ‘paw’ take his paw in your hand and give him a snack. Now do it again, and after a few tries do not take his paw so quickly. State the word ‘paw’, count to 1 and only then take it. You must notice that he is raising his paw up as you say the word. If he does not then return to saying it at the same time. Do it a couple of more times then slow your reaction again. After 2 or 3 sessions most Molossuss pick this trick up rather quickly.
Teach your Molossus to give you a high 5
Like a lot of tricks the high five is a progression of a basic trick, and in this case it’s the paw trick. Hold a treat in your two fingers and lift your hand somewhat higher than you would for the paw trick. Your Molossus will think you wish to perform the paw trick and will grab for the snack with his paw as we trained him earlier. As he reaches up you say “high 5” and give him the treat. Once your Molossus has mastered the paw trick this one will probably be extremely simple to learn and with just a couple of sessions he will be performing it on hand signal rather than vocal commands.
Teach your Molossus to jump through a hoop
Before you begin this one I would simply like to ask you to be a little practical and not hold the hoop too high as you do not really want your Molossus to hurt himself while performing the trick. Set your Molossus to 1 side of a hula hoop, get him to focus on your hand on the opposite side of the hoop. Place a treat in your hand and offer the Molossus the command to stop sitting. Initially he may try to walk around or beneath the hoop. If this takes place start again. Your Molossus wants the treat and will soon learn that going around or below does not get it done so he’ll quickly start going through it. The second he does, state “hoop” and offer him the treat. He will soon be leaping through the hoop on the command of “hoop”. When I initially began doing this trick I owned a medium sized dog, so I began with the hoop six inches from the floor and gradually lifted it to waist height. In the event that you have a smaller sized dog you may wish to start with the hoop on the floor so he simply goes through the hoop and then slowly lift it more once he gets accustomed to the trick.
I trust you have enjoyed learning these 3 tricks you can teach your Molossus. Have patience with your Molossus and most importantly, have fun!
