To teach your Hamiltonstovare tricks, even simple ones, you need to have some of his favorite treats, go to a quiet suitable location and keep the learning sessions to under 15 minutes or your Hamiltonstovare will begin to get bored. Just remember when he gets something right give him lots of appreciation and a reward snack, though take care not to get him too thrilled or he can lose concentration.
Teach your Hamiltonstovare to give you his paw
To teach your Hamiltonstovare to give you his paw, initially get him to sit, then as you state the word ‘paw’ take his paw in your hand and give him a snack. And then do it again, and after a couple of tries don’t take his paw so fast. State the word ‘paw’, count to 1 and then take it. You must observe that he is bringing his paw upward as you say the word. If he doesn’t then go back to saying it at the same time. Do it a few more times then slow your reaction once again. After a few sessions most Hamiltonstovares pick this trick up quite quickly.
Teach your Hamiltonstovare to offer you a high five
Like a lot of tricks the high five is a continuation of an easier trick, and in this case it’s the paw trick. Place a snack in your two fingers and lift your hand just a little higher than you would for the paw trick. Your Hamiltonstovare will believe you want to do the paw trick and will reach for the snack with his paw as we had trained him earlier. As he rises you state “high 5” and offer your Hamiltonstovare the treat. When your Hamiltonstovare has actually mastered the paw trick this one will probably be very simple to learn and with only a couple of sessions he will be performing it from your hand signal instead of voice control.
Teach your Hamiltonstovare to leap through a hoop
Before you begin this 1 I would just like to ask you to be a little sensible and not suspend the hoop too high up as you do not really want your Hamiltonstovare to harm himself while doing the trick. Set your Hamiltonstovare on one side of a hula hoop, get him to pay attention to your hand on the other side of the hoop. Place a snack in your hand and give the Hamiltonstovare the direction to stop sitting. In the beginning he may try to go around or underneath the hoop. When this occurs begin again. Your Hamiltonstovare wants the snack and will soon learn that going around or below doesn’t get it done so he’ll soon start going through it. The second he does, say “hoop” and give him the snack. He will quickly be leaping through the hoop on the command of “hoop”. When I started doing this trick I had a medium sized dog, so I started with the hoop 6 inches from the floor and slowly raised it to waist high. If you own a smaller dog you might desire to begin with the hoop on the floor so he simply goes through the hoop and then gradually elevate it as he gets used to the trick.
I really hope you have enjoyed learning these 3 tricks you can teach your Hamiltonstovare. Have patience with your Hamiltonstovare and most importantly, have a good time!
