Teach a Istrian Shorthaired Hound To Jump for Agility

Teach Your Istrian Shorthaired Hound to Jump for AgilityThis blog is concerning teaching a Istrian Shorthaired Hound jumping for agility. We are often asked, “What number of jumps is best to begin with?” You can never have enough solo jumps to practice agility. A good starting place is four jumps. This is the fewest number of jumps suggested.

How to Teach the Istrian Shorthaired Hound jumping: Begin with 4

You can teach a Istrian Shorthaired Hound a number of exercises, drills, and skills with four jumps. 4 jumps will allow you to develop on a short jump chute or jump grid. You can setup a “box” with your jumps and practice 270 degree jumps, collection, and handling. You can teach your Istrian Shorthaired Hound jumping right and left. You can be outside the box and send your Istrian Shorthaired Hound or you can handle from within the box. Your jumps could be positioned in a lateral row, so you could practice serpentines and threadles.

Teach the Istrian Shorthaired Hound 8 Jumps

Take the next step and practice eight jumps. Now you can position two boxes with one starter jump. You’ve now increased the number of drills that you can practice with your Istrian Shorthaired Hound. Your jump grids can be of suggested size and number of jumps. You could also position your jumps in a circle with the jump bars normal to the circle or on the perimeter of the circle. This setup also allows you to train a variety of drills.

Teaching the Istrian Shorthaired Hound Double and Triple Jumps

The next consideration is a double jump and a triple jump. You can set two or 3 single jumps together to make your expanded jump, but having double and triple jumps in your course work is especially helpful to practice. We’ve seen many Istrian Shorthaired Hounds run a perfect course and the last obstacle is a triple and the Istrian Shorthaired Hound is not equipped to do it, and bang, down goes the bar.
