To teach your English Water Spaniel tricks, even the easy ones, you need to carry some delicious treats, go to a secluded suitable place and keep the learning sessions to 10 – 15 minutes or your English Water Spaniel will begin to get tired. Don’t forget that when he gets something right give him great deals of praise and a reward treat, just take care not to get him extremely fired up or he might lose focus.
Teach your English Water Spaniel to offer you his paw
To teach your English Water Spaniel to offer you his paw, first get him to sit, then as you say the word ‘paw’ take his paw in your hand and offer him a treat. Now do this again, and after a few tries do not take his paw so quickly. State the word ‘paw’, count to 1 and only then take it. You need to see that he is bringing his paw upward as you say the word. If he doesn’t then return to saying it at the very same time. Do it a couple more times then slow your response once again. After just a few sessions most English Water Spaniels pick this trick up rather quickly.
Teach your English Water Spaniel to offer you a high 5
Like a lot of tricks the high five is a progression of an easier trick, in this case it’s the paw trick. Hold a snack in your fingers and lift your hand a bit higher than you’d raise it for the paw trick. Your English Water Spaniel will believe you wish to do the paw trick and will reach for the snack with his paw as we had trained him earlier. While he rises you say “high 5” and give your English Water Spaniel the snack. Once your English Water Spaniel has mastered the paw trick this one will most likely be really simple to master and with only a couple of sessions he will be performing it on hand signal instead of voice control.
Teach your English Water Spaniel to jump through a hoop
Before you begin this one I would just like to ask you to be a little reasonable and not suspend the hoop higher than necessary as you do not want your English Water Spaniel to hurt himself while carrying out the trick. Set your English Water Spaniel on 1 side of a hula hoop, get him to pay attention to your hand on the opposite side of the hoop. Place a treat in your hand and give the English Water Spaniel the direction to stop sitting. Initially he might attempt to go around or underneath the hula hoop. When this occurs start again. Your English Water Spaniel desires the treat and will soon discover that going around or under does not get it done so he’ll soon start going through it. When he does, state “hoop” and give him the snack. He will quickly be jumping through the hoop on the command of “hoop”. When I initially began teaching this trick I had a medium sized dog, so I began with the hoop 6 inches from the ground and slowly raised it to waist high. On the occasion that you own a smaller dog you might wish to begin with the hoop touching the ground so he simply goes through the hoop and after that slowly lift it more once he gets accustomed to the trick.
I know you have enjoyed these 3 tricks you can teach your English Water Spaniel. Have patience with your English Water Spaniel and most of all, have fun!
