Sitting is one of the very first techniques that should be taught to your Tervuren and forms the ground work for a number of other skills. Keep her from falling towards you by holding 1 hand under her chin and with the second hand dangle the reward above your Tervuren’s nose. Keep repeating distinctly and intelligibly, “sit up.” Do not force her to sit up too long at any one time, however repeat the training often and reward her frequently with plenty of kudos and snacks.

In her 1st lesson she will call for a surprising amount of help and support from your hand to prevent her from pitching forward, but as she gains better control of the stabilizing muscles and understands what you want her to do, she’ll depend less on your hand to hold her in position. Then you can gradually give your Tervuren less help and support up until you will basically have to keep one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be set to stop her falling forward; in the future you might withdraw the hand completely and just suspend the reward just over the level of your Tervuren’s head.

Teach Your Tervuren To Sit: Remove the Aids Progressively

After steady training she will sit up for a long time after you get her to sit. Next she should be set up against your wall, so as to offer her a support for her back only. After she has taken in this and can hold her posture easily, practice with her up against chair legs, cushions or other items that give her less and less help and support. Gradually she will get the hang of how to keep her stability and sit without something to rest against.

Teach Your Tervuren to Sit: Putting It All Together

During the course of all this training the phrase "sit up" will have been instilled upon her subconscious by means of frequent repetition. Now is the final training to teach your Tervuren to sit up as quickly as she hears the phrase. It's highly likely, if she has been carefully taught, you will only have to summon her out into the room, show to her a snack, hold it up a reasonable distance from the ground, say "sit up" and she will do so. Then you'll just give her the reward while still in position.

The only necessity for perfection is to practice with your Tervuren several times a day until she can sit up on command and without being shown a reward; give her the rewards only once she has adhered to the command.

Teach Your Tervuren Other Tricks

You have now the method for teaching your Tervuren many other skills.
