Training Your Talbot To Sit

Teach Your Talbot to Sit

Are you aspiring to teach your Talbot to sit? The skill of sitting up is quite easily taught to petite dogs, but much bigger pooches are another story. It’s problematic for them to maintain their equilibrium.

Teach Your Talbot to Sit: Prep work

Sitting is one of the very first skills that should be taught to your Talbot and provides the groundwork for myriad other tricks. In order to train a Talbot to sit up, organize some snacks as a reward, and put the Talbot on her butt in a corner, to ensure that she is unable to fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.

Teach Your Talbot to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Words

Prevent her from tilting forward by securing one hand on her chin and with your other hand dangle the treat above your Talbot’s face. Keep saying clearly and deliberately, “sit.” Don’t make her sit for too long at any one time, however repeat the lesson often and reward her regularly with lots of adoration and treats.

Teach Your Talbot to Sit: Help Her Maintain Balance

During the 1st lesson she will require quite a bit of assistance from you to prevent her from pitching forward, but as she gets control of her balancing muscles and finds out what you want her to do, she’ll depend less and less on your hand to keep her steady. Then you can gradually give her less help up until you will just have to maintain one hand in position two or three inches from her chin or neck, to be ready to prevent her from falling forward; eventually you may withdraw your hand entirely and just simply dangle the snack just above the height of her face.

Teach Your Talbot To Sit: Remove the Help Gradually Over Time

With frequent training your Talbot will stay seated for a good while after you tell her to. The next step is she should be set against the wall, so as to give her support for her back only. Immediately after she has mastered this and can maintain her place easily, rehearse with her up against chair legs, pillows or other items that offer her less and less support. Subsequently she will learn to preserve her stability and sit without something to rest against.

Teach Your Talbot to Sit: Putting It All Together

During the course of all this training the command "sit up" will have been instilled upon her mind with the assistance of constant repetition. Now here's the final lesson to teach your Talbot to sit up immediately after she hears the phrase. There's a good chance, if she has been diligently taught, you will simply have to summon her out into the room, reveal a treat, hold it up a reasonable distance from the floor, say "sit up or sit" and she will obey. Then you'll just give her the treat while still in position.

The only necessity for flawlessness is to rehearse with your Talbot several times daily until she will sit up when commanded to and without being shown a reward; give her the treats only after she has adhered to the order.

Teach Your Talbot Other Tricks

You have now the foundation for teaching your Talbot many other tricks. She can now learn to beg by moving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she will move in sync with yours. She can also be taught to salute by bringing one paw up to the side of her head, or to keep a toy in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other articles of clothing.

When instructing a Talbot to tolerate being dressed up, don't try to get her to wear too many things simultaneously. Try her at first with a cap. Once she gets used to that you could put on a coat and steadily introduce her to the other clothing.

Take joy in "teaching your Talbot the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun at the same time!
