Teaching Your Wetterhoun To Sit

Teach Your Wetterhoun to Sit

Are you aiming to teach your Wetterhoun to sit? The skill of sitting up is easily taught to petite dogs, yet much larger pooches are a different story. It is hard for them to maintain their equilibrium.

Teach Your Wetterhoun to Sit: Foundation

Sitting up is one of the initial skills that should be taught to a Wetterhoun and is the foundation for a large number of other tricks. In order to train a Wetterhoun to sit up, prep some snacks as a perk, and set your Wetterhoun on her backside in a corner, to ensure she won’t be able to fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no space to stumble.

Teach Your Wetterhoun to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Words

Stop her from tilting to the front by holding one hand under her chin and using the other hand hold the reward above the Wetterhoun’s nose. Keep repeating deliberately and distinctly, “sit up.” Don’t make her sit up too long at one time, but repeat the training frequently and reward her frequently with lots of adoration and snacks.

Teach Your Wetterhoun to Sit: Help Her Balance

Throughout the first lesson your Wetterhoun will require significant support from your hand to stop her from pitching forward, but as she gains more control of her muscles and sees what you want her to do, she’ll count less on your hand to keep her in position. Gradually, you can give her less assistance up until you’ll basically have to leave one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be prepared to stop her falling forward; in the future you will be able to take away this hand altogether and just suspend the treat right above the level of your Wetterhoun’s face.

Teach Your Wetterhoun To Sit: Remove the Help Gradually

After regular training your Wetterhoun will sit up for a long time after you get her to sit. Afterward she should be set up against a wall, so as to provide her assistance for her back only. Once she has taken in this and can keep her posture easily, rehearse with her against chair legs, pillows or other things that provide her less and less aid. Sooner or later she will understand how to sustain her equilibrium and sit without anything to rest on.

Teach Your Wetterhoun to Sit: Putting It All Together

During all these lessons the words "sit up" will have been instilled upon her psyche through constant repetition. Now comes the final training to teach your Wetterhoun to sit up whenever she hears the phrase. There's a great chance, if she has been diligently instructed, you will simply have to call her out into the room, reveal to her a treat, hold it up a reasonable distance from the floor, say "sit up" and she'll obey. Then just give her the snack while still in position.

The only criteria for excellence is to rehearse with your Wetterhoun several times daily until she sits on command and without being shown a treat; give her the snacks only after she has adhered to the order.

Teach Your Wetterhoun Other Tricks

You have now the groundwork for teaching your Wetterhoun many other tricks. She now can learn how to beg by moving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she will move in sync with yours. She also can learn to salute by bringing one paw to the side of her head, or to keep a wooden pipe in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothes.

In teaching a Wetterhoun to submit to being dressed up, don't try to make her wear too many things at once. Try at first with just a cap. Soon after she gets accustomed to that you can put on a coat and slowly and gradually introduce her to more clothing.

Take pleasure in "teaching your Wetterhoun the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun while you're doing it!
