Training Your Gascon Saintongeois To Sit

Teach Your Gascon Saintongeois to Sit

Are you working to teach your Gascon Saintongeois to sit? The talent of sitting up is regularly taught to small dogs, but much bigger pet dogs are another story. It is difficult for them to maintain their balance.

Teach Your Gascon Saintongeois to Sit: Prep

Sitting is one of the fundamental tricks that you should teach to your Gascon Saintongeois and is the ground work for plenty of other skills. To train a Gascon Saintongeois to sit up, organize some snacks as a reward, and set the Gascon Saintongeois on her butt in a corner, so that she won’t fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no space to lose balance.

Teach Your Gascon Saintongeois to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Sound of The Words

Stop her from tilting to the front by sticking 1 hand underneath her chin and using the second hand hold the treat above her face. Keep saying distinctly and intelligibly, “sit.” Don’t force her to sit up for too long at one time, but repeat the lesson frequently and reward her frequently with loads of cheers and snacks.

Teach Your Gascon Saintongeois to Sit: Help Her Maintain Balance

During the very first lesson she will call for a lot of help and support from you to prevent her from pitching forward, but as she gets control of the muscles and finds out what you want her to do, she’ll rely less upon your hand to keep her in position. Gradually, you can give her less support until you’ll merely have to maintain one hand in position two or three inches from her neck or chin, to be set to prevent her from falling forward; later on you can most likely withdraw this hand entirely and merely hold the snack right above the level of her face.

Teach Your Gascon Saintongeois To Sit: Remove the Assistance Gradually

After frequent training she will stay seated long after you tell her to. Next she should be set up against your wall, so as to offer her a support for her back. When she has learned this and can keep her posture easily, practice with her against chair legs, pillows or other objects that offer her less and less aid. Gradually she will learn to sustain her balance and sit without needing anything to rest on.

Teach Your Gascon Saintongeois to Sit: Putting It All Together

Throughout all these lessons the command "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her mind through frequent repetition. Lastly comes the final training to teach your Gascon Saintongeois to sit up immediately after she hears the words. There's a good chance, if she has been properly taught, you will only have to get her out into the room, reveal a snack, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit up" and she will obey. Then give her the reward while still in place.

The only prerequisite for perfection is to rehearse with her multiple times daily until she can sit when commanded to and without being shown a snack; give her the treats only once she has adhered to the order.

Teach Your Gascon Saintongeois Other Tricks

You have now the fundamentals for teaching your Gascon Saintongeois many other tricks. She now can be taught to beg by moving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she'll move in coordination with yours. She also can be taught to salute by moving one paw up to the side of her head, or to keep something in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothing.

While training a Gascon Saintongeois to submit to being dressed up, do not try to get her to wear too many garments at one time. Try her at first with just a cap. Soon after she gets accustomed to that you can put on a jacket and steadily introduce her to more clothes.
