Training Your Dachshund To Sit

Teach Your Dachshund to Sit

Are you trying to teach your Dachshund to sit? The skill of sitting up is effortlessly taught to compact dogs, however much larger doggies are a different story. It’s tough for them to sustain their equilibrium.

Teach Your Dachshund to Sit: Preparation

Sitting up is one of the fundamental techniques that should be taught to a Dachshund and lays the ground work for plenty of other skills. In order to train a Dachshund to sit up, prepare some treats as a reward, and place the Dachshund on her haunches in a corner, so that she can’t fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no space to lose balance.

Teach Your Dachshund to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Words

Keep her from falling towards you by keeping your hand on her chin and with the other hand hold her snack above the Dachshund’s face. Keep repeating distinctly and deliberately, “sit.” Do not make her sit up for too long at any one time, but do repeat the training frequently and reward her often with loads of cheers and treats.

Teach Your Dachshund to Sit: Help Her Keep Her Balance

During her initial lesson she will need a surprising amount of help and support from you to prevent her from falling forward, but as she gets more control of the balancing muscles and finds out what you want her to do, she will rely less and less upon your hand to hold her steady. Gradually, you can give her less assistance till you will only have to keep one hand in position two or three inches from her chin or neck, to be in position to prevent her from falling forward; later on you can probably withdraw this hand altogether and simply dangle the reward just over the height of your Dachshund’s face.

Teach Your Dachshund To Sit: Remove the Help Slowly

After consistent practice your Dachshund will stay seated for a long time after you tell her to. The next step is she should be set up against your wall, so as to provide her support for her back only. After she has mastered this and can hold her posture easily, rehearse with her using chair legs, pillows or other things that provide her less and less assistance. Subsequently she will figure out how to keep her equilibrium and sit without something to lean against.

Teach Your Dachshund to Sit: Putting It All Together

Throughout all this training the command "sit up" will have been impressed upon her subconscious by regular repetition. Lastly comes the final training to teach your Dachshund to sit up immediately after she hears the words. It's highly likely, if she has been diligently taught, you will only have to get her out in the room, show to her a reward, hold it up a reasonable distance from the floor, say "sit up or sit" and she will obey. Then just give her the snack while still in place.

The only criteria for flawlessness is to rehearse with your Dachshund multiple times a day until she can sit when told and without being shown a reward; give her the rewards only once she has adhered to the order.

Teach Your Dachshund Other Tricks

You have now the fundamentals for teaching your Dachshund many other skills. She now can learn to beg by waving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she'll move in coordination with yours. She can also learn to salute by bringing one paw up to the side of her head, or to keep an object in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothing.

In instructing a Dachshund to accept being clothed, do not try to make her wear too many garments simultaneously. Try at first with just a cap. Only after she becomes accustomed to that you could put on a coat and incrementally introduce her to the other garments.
