Training Your Beagle-Harrier To Sit

Teach Your Beagle-Harrier to Sit

Are you aiming to teach your Beagle-Harrier to sit? The skill of sitting up is easily taught to small dogs, however bigger pet dogs are a different story. It’s tricky for them to keep their equilibrium.

Teach Your Beagle-Harrier to Sit: Prep work

Sitting up is one of the very first techniques that should be taught to a Beagle-Harrier and is the ground work for myriad other tricks. In order to train a Beagle-Harrier to sit up, put together some treats as a perk, and place your Beagle-Harrier on her butt in a corner, to make sure that she won’t fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.

Teach Your Beagle-Harrier to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Command

Stop her from tilting towards you by holding your hand beneath her chin and using your second hand hold her snack above your Beagle-Harrier’s face. Keep repeating distinctly and intelligibly, “sit.” Do not make her sit up for too long at any one time, however repeat the lesson frequently and reward her regularly with loads of praise and treats.

Teach Your Beagle-Harrier to Sit: Help Her Balance

Throughout her very first lesson she will call for considerable help from your hand to prevent her from falling forward, but as she gets control of the stabilizing muscles and understands what you want her to do, she’ll count less on your hand to keep her in position. Gradually, you can give your Beagle-Harrier less assistance till you’ll simply have to keep one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be available to stop her falling forward; eventually you can most likely withdraw this hand entirely and simply dangle the treat right over the height of your Beagle-Harrier’s head.

Teach Your Beagle-Harrier To Sit: Remove the Help Incrementally

With regular practice she will sit up long after you get her to sit. Then she should be set against the wall, so as to offer her a support for her back only. Only after she has mastered this and can hold her posture easily, rehearse with her using chair legs, pillows or other items that provide her less and less assistance. Ultimately she will grasp how to maintain her stability and sit up without relying on something to rest against.

Teach Your Beagle-Harrier to Sit: Putting It All Together

In the course of all this training the phrase "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her psyche through regular repetition. Now here's the final lesson to teach your Beagle-Harrier to sit up as quickly as she hears the words. There's a good chance, if she has been carefully trained, you will simply have to get her out in the room, display a reward, hold it up a reasonable distance from the floor, say "sit up or sit" and she will do so. Then you'll just give her the reward while still in position.

The only prerequisite for excellence is to practice with your Beagle-Harrier several times daily until she sits up when commanded to and without being shown a reward; give her the snacks only after she has adhered to the command.

Teach Your Beagle-Harrier Other Tricks

You have now the foundation for teaching your Beagle-Harrier many other tricks. She now can learn how to beg by waving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she will move in coordination with yours. She also can be taught to salute by moving one paw to the side of her head, or to hold a wooden pipe in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothes.

When instructing a Beagle-Harrier to submit to being dressed up, do not try to get her to wear too many items simultaneously. Try at first with just a hat. Soon after she gets adjusted to that you can put on a jacket and slowly and gradually introduce her to more garments.
