Training Your Aidi To Sit

Teach Your Aidi to Sit

Are you attempting to teach your Aidi to sit? The skill of sitting up is quite easily taught to small dogs, however much larger dogs are a different story. It’s difficult for them to maintain their equilibrium.

Teach Your Aidi to Sit: Preparing

Sitting up is one of the fundamental skills that you should teach to a Aidi and is the ground work for a number of other techniques. To train a Aidi to sit up, prepare some snacks as a perk, and place your Aidi on her butt in the corner, so she won’t fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no room to stumble.

Teach Your Aidi to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Phrase

Keep her from tilting forward by securing one hand underneath her chin and with the second hand hold her snack above her face. Keep repeating intelligibly and clearly, “sit up.” Do not force her to sit up for too long at any one time, but do repeat the training frequently and reward her often with plenty of recognition and treats.

Teach Your Aidi to Sit: Help Her Keep Her Balance

In her very first lesson your Aidi will require considerable support from your hand to keep her from tumbling forward, but as she gets control of the muscles and starts to learn what you want, she will rely less and less upon your hand to keep her steady. Then you can gradually give her less help and support up until you will only have to maintain one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be ready to prevent her falling forward; eventually you will be able to withdraw your hand entirely and simply suspend the reward right over the level of your Aidi’s head.

Teach Your Aidi To Sit: Remove the Assistance Over Time

After frequent training she will sit up for a good while after you tell her to. Next she should be set up against the wall, so as to give her assistance for her back only. Soon after she has soaked up this and can hold her position effortlessly, rehearse with her against chair legs, cushions or other items that provide her less and less support. Subsequently she will understand how to preserve her balance and sit up without relying on anything to lean against.

Teach Your Aidi to Sit: Putting It All Together

In the course of all this training the words "sit up" will have been impressed upon her psyche through persistent repetition. Lastly here's the final training to teach your Aidi to sit up immediately after she hears the phrase. Chances are, if she has been carefully trained, you will only have to get her out in the room, show her a reward, hold it up a reasonable distance from the ground, say "sit" and she will do so. Then you'll give her the treat while still in position.

The only necessity for excellence is to train with your Aidi several times a day until she sits when commanded to and without being shown a snack; give her the snacks only after she has obeyed the direction.

Teach Your Aidi Other Tricks

You have now the foundation for teaching your Aidi many other tricks. She now can learn to beg by waving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she will move in rhythm with yours. She also can be taught to salute by bringing one paw to the side of her head, or to keep a wooden pipe in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothes.

While training a Aidi to submit to being dressed up, don't try to get her to wear too many items at one time. Try her at first with just a hat. Soon after she gets used to that you could put on a coat and progressively introduce her to the other clothing.

Take pleasure in "teaching your Aidi the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun while you're doing it!
