Are you aiming to teach your Stabyhoun to sit? The technique of sitting up is easily taught to petite dogs, though much larger canines are another story. It’s difficult for them to sustain their equilibrium.

Teach Your Stabyhoun to Sit: Groundwork

Sitting up is one of the most basic tricks that you should teach to a Stabyhoun and lays the groundwork for numerous other skills. To train a Stabyhoun to sit up, put together some treats as a perk, and put your Stabyhoun on her backside in the corner, to make sure that she can’t fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no space to stumble.

Teach Your Stabyhoun to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Command

Prevent her from pitching to the front by holding one hand on her chin and with your other hand dangle the snack above your Stabyhoun’s nose. Keep repeating clearly and deliberately, “sit.” Don’t force her to sit up too long at any one time, however repeat the instruction often and reward her frequently with lots of appreciation and snacks.

Teach Your Stabyhoun to Sit: Help Her Balance

Throughout her 1st lesson she will demand considerable help and support from your hand to keep her from falling forward, but as she gets more control of the muscles and understands what you want, she will rely less on your hand to hold her in position. Gradually, you can give your Stabyhoun less assistance till you’ll only have to maintain one hand in position two or three inches from her chin or neck, to be set to stop her from falling forward; later you can probably take away the hand completely and just hold the reward just above the height of your Stabyhoun’s head.

Teach Your Stabyhoun To Sit: Remove the Help Eventually

With regular training your Stabyhoun will stay seated for a long time after you tell her to. The next step is she should be set up against a wall, so as to provide her a support for her back only. Immediately after she has understood this and can hold her place effortlessly, practice with her using chair legs, cushions or other objects that provide her less and less help. Eventually she will be trained to preserve her stability and sit without relying on something to lean on.




Teach Your Stabyhoun to Sit: Putting It All Together

During the course of all this training the phrase "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her mind by frequent repetition. Last here's the final training to teach your Stabyhoun to sit up whenever she hears the command. There's a great chance, if she has been carefully trained, you will just have to get her out in the room, reveal a treat, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit" and she will obey. Then you'll just give her the snack while still in place.

The only requirement for excellence is to rehearse with your Stabyhoun several times a day until she can sit up when told and without being shown a treat; give her the snacks only once she has obeyed the command.

Teach Your Stabyhoun Other Tricks

You have now the groundwork for teaching your Stabyhoun many other skills. She now can learn how to beg by waving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she'll move in coordination with yours. She also can learn to salute by bringing one paw up to the side of her head, or to keep a toy in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothing.

When training a Stabyhoun to accept being dressed up, don't try to get her to wear too many clothes at the same time. Try her at first with just a hat. After she becomes used to that you could put on a jacket and gradually over time introduce her to the other clothing.
