Stop her from tilting to the front by maintaining your hand underneath her chin and with the second hand hold her reward above your Scottish Deerhound’s face. Keep saying clearly and intelligibly, “sit up.” Do not make her sit too long at any one time, however repeat the instruction often and reward her regularly with plenty of appreciation and treats.

During her beginner lesson she will demand quite a bit of help from your hand to prevent her from pitching forward, but as she gets more control of the muscles and sees what you want, she’ll rely less and less upon your hand to hold her in position. Gradually, you can give your Scottish Deerhound less support until you will only have to leave one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be prepared to prevent her from falling forward; eventually you can remove this hand and just suspend the treat right over the height of your Scottish Deerhound’s head.

After constant training she will stay seated well after you set her up. Next she should be set against your wall, so as to give her a support for her back only. Immediately after she has figured out this and can hold her position easily, rehearse with her up against chair legs, cushions or other things that provide her less and less help and support. Ultimately she will learn how to sustain her balance and sit up without relying on anything to lean on.

In the course of all these lessons the phrase "sit up" will have been impressed upon her psyche with the assistance of persistent repetition. Now is the final lesson to teach your Scottish Deerhound to sit up immediately after she hears the command. Most likely, if she has been carefully taught, you will just have to summon her out in the room, display a snack, hold it up a reasonable distance from the floor, say "sit up" and she'll obey. Then give her the reward while still in place.
The only prerequisite for excellence is to practice with her multiple times daily until she sits up when told and without being shown a treat; give her the treats only once she has obeyed the order.
Teach Your Scottish Deerhound Other Tricks
You have now the basis for teaching your Scottish Deerhound many other tricks. She now can learn to beg by moving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she will move in conjunction with yours. She also can learn to salute by moving one paw up to the side of her head, or to hold something in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothing.
When instructing a Scottish Deerhound to tolerate being clothed, don't try to get her to wear too many garments at one time. Try at first with a hat. Soon after she becomes familiar with that you could put on a jacket and steadily introduce her to more garments.
