Tips For Training Your Laekenois To Sit

Teach Your Laekenois to Sit

Are you making an attempt to teach your Laekenois to sit? The technique of sitting up is quite easily taught to very small dogs, however larger canines are another story. It is difficult for them to maintain their equilibrium.

Teach Your Laekenois to Sit: Preparing

Sitting is one of the fundamental tricks that should be taught to your Laekenois and forms the groundwork for lots of other skills. To train a Laekenois to sit up, prep some treats as a reward, and place your Laekenois on her haunches in the corner, so she is unable to fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to stumble.

Teach Your Laekenois to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Sound of The Words

Prevent her from tilting forward by securing your hand on her chin and with the second hand dangle the snack above her nose. Keep repeating deliberately and distinctly, “sit up.” Do not make her sit up too long at one time, but do repeat the training frequently and reward her often with a lot of praise and treats.

Teach Your Laekenois to Sit: Help Her Keep Her Balance

In her initial lesson your Laekenois will demand a surprising amount of support from your hand to stop her from pitching forward, but as she gets control of the stabilizing muscles and realises what you want her to do, she will depend less and less upon your hand to hold her in position. Gradually, you can give your Laekenois less help and support til you’ll just have to keep one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be in place to stop her from falling forward; later on you might remove this hand and merely hold the snack just over the height of your Laekenois’s head.

Teach Your Laekenois To Sit: Remove the Help Eventually

After regular training she will stay seated well after you get her to sit. Afterward she should be set up against the wall, so as to provide her help for her back only. Once she has learned this and can maintain her position effortlessly, rehearse with her using chair legs, pillows or other things that give her less and less aid. In time she will learn how to maintain her stability and sit without something to lean against.

Teach Your Laekenois to Sit: Putting It All Together

During all these lessons the words "sit up" will have been instilled upon her subconscious through persistent repetition. Lastly comes the final lesson to teach your Laekenois to sit up right after she hears the command. Most likely, if she has been diligently instructed, you will simply have to get her out into the room, reveal to her a reward, hold it up a suitable distance from the ground, say "sit up" and she'll obey. Then just give her the snack while still in position.

The only requirement for excellence is to practice with your Laekenois multiple times a day until she will sit up when commanded to and without being shown a treat; give her the treats only once she has followed the order.

Teach Your Laekenois Other Tricks

You have now the fundamentals for teaching your Laekenois many other tricks. She now can learn how to beg by waving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she'll move in sync with yours. She also can learn to salute by bringing one paw to the side of her head, or to keep an object in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothes.

While teaching a Laekenois to submit to being clothed, do not try to make her wear too many things simultaneously. Try at first with a cap. Soon after she gets familiar with that you could put on a coat and steadily introduce her to the other clothing.

Delight in "teaching your Laekenois the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun at the same time!
