Tips For Training Your Bloodhound To Sit

Teach Your Bloodhound to Sit

Are you attempting to teach your Bloodhound to sit? The skill of sitting up is quickly taught to small dogs, but much bigger pooches are a different story. It’s tough for them to sustain their balance.

Teach Your Bloodhound to Sit: Groundwork

Sitting up is one of the very first tricks that you should teach to a Bloodhound and lays the foundation for a large number of other skills. To train a Bloodhound to sit up, organize some snacks as a perk, and set the Bloodhound on her butt in a corner, to make sure that she is unable to fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.

Teach Your Bloodhound to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Sound of The Words

Prevent her from pitching to the front by keeping 1 hand on her chin and using your other hand dangle the treat above her face. Keep repeating deliberately and distinctly, “sit up.” Don’t force her to sit up too long at any one time, but do repeat the lesson often and reward her regularly with lots of cheers and treats.

Teach Your Bloodhound to Sit: Help Her Keep Her Balance

During the initial lesson she will demand a lot of help and support from your hand to keep her from tumbling forward, but as she gains control of the muscles and realizes what you want, she will count less on your hand to hold her in position. Then you can gradually give your Bloodhound less assistance til you will simply have to keep one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be in position to stop her from falling forward; in the future you can easily withdraw the hand entirely and just simply suspend the treat right above the level of her head.

Teach Your Bloodhound To Sit: Remove the Aids Progressively

After constant practice your Bloodhound will sit up well after you command her. Then she should be set up against your wall, so as to provide her a support for her back only. After she has grasped this and can keep her position easily, practice with her up against chair legs, pillows or other things that give her less and less assistance. In time she will get the hang of how to preserve her balance and sit up without relying on anything to rest against.

Teach Your Bloodhound to Sit: Putting It All Together

During the course of all this training the words "sit up" will have been instilled upon her psyche by means of frequent repetition. Last comes the final lesson to teach your Bloodhound to sit up immediately after she hears the phrase. Chances are, if she has been carefully instructed, you will just have to call her out in the room, reveal a reward, hold it up a reasonable distance from the ground, say "sit up or sit" and she will obey. Then you'll give her the reward while still in position.

The only prerequisite for flawlessness is to rehearse with your Bloodhound multiple times daily until she can sit on command and without being shown a reward; give her the treats only after she has followed the direction.

Teach Your Bloodhound Other Tricks

You have now the technique for teaching your Bloodhound many other tricks. She now can learn how to beg by waving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she'll move in sync with yours. She can also learn to salute by moving one paw to the side of her head, or to keep a toy in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothing.

While teaching a Bloodhound to submit to being clothed, don't try to make her wear too many things at once. Try at first with a cap. Soon after she gets familiar with that you can put on a coat and gradually over time introduce her to the other clothing.

Take pleasure in "teaching your Bloodhound the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun along the way!
