Are you making an attempt to teach your Basset Artesien Normand to sit? The skill of sitting up is easily taught to compact dogs, but bigger pooches are another story. It’s difficult for them to maintain their balance.
Teach Your Basset Artesien Normand to Sit: Groundwork
Sitting is one of the most basic skills that you should teach to a Basset Artesien Normand and lays the groundwork for several other skills. In order to train a Basset Artesien Normand to sit up, organize some treats as a reward, and place the Basset Artesien Normand on her backside in the corner, so she can’t fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.
Teach Your Basset Artesien Normand to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Command
Prevent her from pitching forward by maintaining 1 hand on her chin and with your other hand hold her snack above your Basset Artesien Normand’s nose. Keep repeating clearly and deliberately, “sit.” Don’t force her to sit too long at one time, however repeat the training routinely and reward her often with plenty of kudos and snacks.
Teach Your Basset Artesien Normand to Sit: Help Her Keep Her Balance
Throughout the 1st lesson she will require quite a bit of help from you to stop her from falling forward, but as she gets control of the muscles and starts to learn what you want her to do, she’ll depend less and less on your hand to hold her steady. Gradually, you can give your Basset Artesien Normand less support until you’ll merely have to leave one hand in position two or three inches from her chin or neck, to be available to prevent her falling forward; later on you might take away your hand entirely and merely hold the snack right above the level of your Basset Artesien Normand’s head.
Teach Your Basset Artesien Normand To Sit: Remove the Aids Eventually
After consistent training your Basset Artesien Normand will sit up for a good while after you set her up. The next step is she should be set against the wall, so as to give her a support for her back. Only after she has learned this and can hold her place easily, rehearse with her against chair legs, pillows or other things that offer her less and less aid. In time she will be able to sustain her equilibrium and sit without having anything to rest on.
Teach Your Basset Artesien Normand to Sit: Putting It All Together
During all this training the words "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her mind through constant repetition. Now comes the final training to teach your Basset Artesien Normand to sit up as quickly as she hears the command. There's a great chance, if she has been diligently trained, you will merely have to summon her out in the room, reveal to her a reward, hold it up a reasonable distance from the ground, say "sit up or sit" and she will obey. Then just give her the treat while still in position.
The only requirement for excellence is to train with her several times daily until she sits up when told and without being shown a reward; give her the treats only once she has complied with the command.
Teach Your Basset Artesien Normand Other Tricks
You have now the fundamentals for teaching your Basset Artesien Normand many other skills. She can now learn to beg by waving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she will move in sync with yours. She also can be taught to salute by bringing one paw to the side of her head, or to hold something in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothes.
In instructing a Basset Artesien Normand to tolerate being clothed, don't try to make her wear too many items at the same time. Try her at first with just a cap. After she becomes familiar with that you can put on a coat and little by little introduce her to the other clothing.
