Tips For Training Your Akita Inu To Sit

Teach Your Akita Inu to Sit

Are you aspiring to teach your Akita Inu to sit? The skill of sitting up is quickly taught to small dogs, however larger pet dogs are another story. It’s tricky for them to keep their balance.

Teach Your Akita Inu to Sit: Anticipation

Sitting up is one of the very first tricks that should be taught to your Akita Inu and is the foundation for innumerable other skills. In order to train a Akita Inu to sit up, put together some treats as a perk, and place your Akita Inu on her rump in a corner, so that she will not fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.

Teach Your Akita Inu to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Command

Protect her from falling to the front by securing your hand beneath her chin and using your other hand hold the snack above the Akita Inu’s nose. Keep saying deliberately and clearly, “sit.” Do not force her to sit too long at any one time, but repeat the instruction routinely and reward her frequently with a lot of kudos and treats.

Teach Your Akita Inu to Sit: Help Her Maintain Balance

In the 1st lesson your Akita Inu will call for considerable support from your hand to stop her from tumbling forward, but as she gains more control of the balancing muscles and figures out what you want her to do, she will depend less and less upon your hand to keep her in position. Gradually, you can give her less assistance until you will merely have to leave one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be available to prevent her falling forward; later on you can remove the hand completely and just simply suspend the snack right above the level of your Akita Inu’s head.

Teach Your Akita Inu To Sit: Remove the Aids Over Time

With constant training she will sit up for a good while after you get her to sit. Afterward she should be set up against the wall, so as to provide her a support for her back only. When she has gotten the knack of this and can hold her position easily, rehearse with her using chair legs, pillows or other things that give her less and less aid. Sooner or later she will understand how to keep her balance and sit up without something to lean against.

Teach Your Akita Inu to Sit: Putting It All Together

In the course of all these lessons the command "sit up" will have been instilled upon her mind through constant repetition. Lastly is the final lesson to teach your Akita Inu to sit up as soon as she hears the words. There's a good chance, if she has been carefully instructed, you will merely have to get her out into the room, display to her a reward, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit" and she'll do so. Then you give her the reward while still in position.

The only requirement for perfection is to practice with her several times daily until she sits up when told and without being shown a treat; give her the snacks only once she has obeyed the order.

Teach Your Akita Inu Other Tricks

You have now the groundwork for teaching your Akita Inu many other tricks. She now can learn to beg by waving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she'll move in conjunction with yours. She also can be taught to salute by moving one paw up to the side of her head, or to hold a wooden pipe in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothes.

When training a Akita Inu to tolerate being clothed, don't try to get her to wear too many clothes at the same time. Try at first with just a cap. Only after she becomes accustomed to that you could put on a jacket and eventually introduce her to the other clothing.

Take joy in "teaching your Akita Inu the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun at the same time!
