Tips For Teaching Your Transylvanian Hound To Sit

Teach Your Transylvanian Hound to Sit

Are you trying to teach your Transylvanian Hound to sit? The skill of sitting up is easily taught to petite dogs, yet larger pet dogs are a different story. It is hard for them to sustain their equilibrium.

Teach Your Transylvanian Hound to Sit: Anticipation

Sitting is one of the first skills that should be taught to a Transylvanian Hound and forms the ground work for various other tricks. In order to train a Transylvanian Hound to sit up, put together some snacks as a perk, and set your Transylvanian Hound on her butt in a corner, so she is unable to fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no room to stumble.

Teach Your Transylvanian Hound to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Words

Stop her from falling towards you by keeping one hand beneath her chin and with the other hand dangle her snack above your Transylvanian Hound’s face. Keep saying intelligibly and distinctly, “sit up.” Don’t make her sit up for too long at one time, but repeat the training regularly and reward her often with a lot of praise and treats.

Teach Your Transylvanian Hound to Sit: Help Her Balance

Throughout the 1st lesson she will demand a surprising amount of help and support from you to prevent her from falling forward, but as she gains more control of her stabilizing muscles and realizes what you want her to do, she’ll depend less upon your hand to keep her steady. Gradually, you can give your Transylvanian Hound less assistance till you will just have to leave one hand in position two or three inches from her chin or neck, to be ready to prevent her falling forward; eventually you can easily take away your hand completely and merely hold the treat just above the level of your Transylvanian Hound’s head.

Teach Your Transylvanian Hound To Sit: Remove the Help Gradually Over Time

With regular practice your Transylvanian Hound will sit up for a good while after you tell her to. Afterward she should be set up against the wall, so as to give her assistance for her back. Soon after she has figured out this and can maintain her position easily, practice with her up against chair legs, pillows or other objects that give her less and less support. Gradually she will be trained to preserve her equilibrium and sit up without needing something to rest against.

Teach Your Transylvanian Hound to Sit: Putting It All Together

During the course of all these lessons the command "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her subconscious by persistent repetition. Now comes the final training to teach your Transylvanian Hound to sit up as quickly as she hears the phrase. There's a good chance, if she has been diligently taught, you will only have to summon her out in the room, display a reward, hold it up a reasonable distance from the floor, say "sit up or sit" and she will do so. Then you'll give her the snack while still in position.

The only prerequisite for flawlessness is to train with her several times a day until she will sit up when commanded to and without being shown a reward; give her the rewards only once she has obeyed the command.

Teach Your Transylvanian Hound Other Tricks

You have now the method for teaching your Transylvanian Hound many other tricks. She can now be taught how to beg by waving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she will move in coordination with yours. She also can be taught to salute by moving one paw to the side of her head, or to hold a toy in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothing.

When training a Transylvanian Hound to submit to being clothed, don't try to get her to wear too many clothes simultaneously. Try her at first with just a hat. Once she gets accustomed to that you can put on a coat and incrementally introduce her to the other garments.
