Tips For Teaching Your Pembroke Welsh Corgi To Sit

Teach Your Pembroke Welsh Corgi to Sit

Are you aiming to teach your Pembroke Welsh Corgi to sit? The talent of sitting up is effortlessly taught to petite dogs, but larger canines are another story. It is hard for them to maintain their balance.

Teach Your Pembroke Welsh Corgi to Sit: Prep work

Sitting is one of the first techniques that you should teach to a Pembroke Welsh Corgi and is the foundation for a large number of other tricks. In order to train a Pembroke Welsh Corgi to sit up, organize some snacks as a reward, and put your Pembroke Welsh Corgi on her butt in a corner, to make sure that she can’t fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no space to stumble.

Teach Your Pembroke Welsh Corgi to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Phrase

Prevent her from falling towards you by securing 1 hand underneath her chin and using the other hand hold her treat above your Pembroke Welsh Corgi’s nose. Keep repeating clearly and intelligibly, “sit up.” Do not make her sit too long at any one time, but repeat the training regularly and reward her regularly with lots of adoration and treats.

Teach Your Pembroke Welsh Corgi to Sit: Help Her Stay Balanced

In her very first lesson your Pembroke Welsh Corgi will need a surprising amount of help from you to prevent her from falling forward, but as she gets control of the balancing muscles and understands what you want, she will depend less and less upon your hand to hold her in position. Then you can gradually give her less support until you will only have to leave one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be waiting to prevent her from falling forward; eventually you can easily take away your hand completely and just simply hold the reward right over the level of her head.

Teach Your Pembroke Welsh Corgi To Sit: Remove the Aids Over Time

After frequent practice she will stay seated long after you tell her to. Then she should be set against your wall, so as to offer her a support for her back only. After she has gotten the knack of this and can hold her place easily, practice with her against chair legs, cushions or other objects that give her less and less support. Gradually she will learn to sustain her equilibrium and sit up without needing anything to rest on.

Teach Your Pembroke Welsh Corgi to Sit: Putting It All Together

During all this training the phrase "sit up" will have been impressed upon her mind through frequent repetition. Now comes the final training to teach your Pembroke Welsh Corgi to sit up right after she hears the phrase. There's a good chance, if she has been properly trained, you will just have to get her out into the room, reveal a snack, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit" and she'll obey. Then you'll just give her the treat while still in place.

The only condition for flawlessness is to practice with her several times a day until she sits up on command and without being shown a snack; give her the treats only after she has adhered to the order.

Teach Your Pembroke Welsh Corgi Other Tricks

You have now the groundwork for teaching your Pembroke Welsh Corgi many other tricks. She now can be taught how to beg by moving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she will move in conjunction with yours. She also can be taught to salute by moving one paw up to the side of her head, or to hold an object in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothes.

In teaching a Pembroke Welsh Corgi to tolerate being dressed up, do not try to get her to wear too many things simultaneously. Try at first with a hat. Once she becomes familiar with that you could put on a coat and incrementally introduce her to the other clothes.

Delight in "teaching your Pembroke Welsh Corgi the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun while you're doing it!
