Tips For Teaching Your Hanover Hound To Sit

Teach Your Hanover Hound to Sit

Are you struggling to teach your Hanover Hound to sit? The technique of sitting up is quite easily taught to small dogs, though much bigger dogs are another story. It is tough for them to sustain their equilibrium.

Teach Your Hanover Hound to Sit: Anticipation

Sitting up is one of the first techniques that should be taught to your Hanover Hound and is the groundwork for plenty of other tricks. In order to train a Hanover Hound to sit up, organize some treats as a reward, and place your Hanover Hound on her haunches in a corner, to ensure that she is unable to fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to stumble.

Teach Your Hanover Hound to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Words

Stop her from falling forward by maintaining 1 hand underneath her chin and with your second hand hold her reward above the Hanover Hound’s nose. Keep saying clearly and intelligibly, “sit.” Don’t make her sit up too long at one time, but repeat the instruction often and reward her frequently with loads of recognition and snacks.

Teach Your Hanover Hound to Sit: Help Her Stay Balanced

During her initial lesson she will need significant help from your hand to prevent her from falling forward, but as she gets more control of her balancing muscles and realizes what you want, she’ll rely less on your hand to keep her in position. Then you can gradually give your Hanover Hound less support til you will merely have to keep one hand in position two or three inches from her neck or chin, to be prepared to prevent her from falling forward; in the future you can easily take away your hand completely and merely dangle the reward just above the level of your Hanover Hound’s face.

Teach Your Hanover Hound To Sit: Remove the Assistance Slowly

With regular practice your Hanover Hound will sit up well after you set her up. Afterward she should be set against a wall, so as to give her a support for her back. After she has taken in this and can maintain her place easily, rehearse with her using chair legs, cushions or other objects that provide her less and less support. In time she will be able to keep her balance and sit up without relying on anything to rest on.

Teach Your Hanover Hound to Sit: Putting It All Together

During the course of all these lessons the command "sit up" will have been impressed upon her subconscious by means of regular repetition. Now here's the final lesson to teach your Hanover Hound to sit up immediately after she hears the words. There's a great chance, if she has been diligently taught, you will merely have to get her out in the room, show a treat, hold it up a reasonable distance from the ground, say "sit up or sit" and she will do so. Then just give her the reward while still in place.

The only necessity for excellence is to train with her multiple times daily until she sits on command and without being shown a treat; give her the treats only once she has adhered to the direction.

Teach Your Hanover Hound Other Tricks

You have now the foundation for teaching your Hanover Hound many other skills. She can now be taught how to beg by moving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she'll move in coordination with yours. She also can learn to salute by bringing one paw to the side of her head, or to keep an object in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothes.

In training a Hanover Hound to accept being dressed up, do not try to get her to wear too many items simultaneously. Try her at first with a cap. Once she becomes accustomed to that you can put on a jacket and steadily introduce her to more clothing.

Enjoy "teaching your Hanover Hound the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun in the process!
