Keep repeating clearly and intelligibly, “sit up.” Do not make her sit too long at one time, however repeat the lesson regularly and reward her frequently with plenty of appreciation and treats.
Teach Your Giant Schnauzer to Sit: Help Her Balance
Throughout her beginner lesson your Giant Schnauzer will require significant help from you to stop her from pitching forward, but as she gets control of the balancing muscles and is aware of what you want her to do, she’ll depend less on your hand to keep her steady. Gradually, you can give her less assistance til you will merely have to keep one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be prepared to prevent her falling forward; later you may remove this hand and merely dangle the treat just over the level of her head.
Teach Your Giant Schnauzer To Sit: Remove the Help Over Time
After regular training she will sit up long after you get her to sit. Next she should be set up against the wall, so as to offer her help for her back. Immediately after she has mastered this and can hold her posture effortlessly, practice with her against chair legs, cushions or other objects that offer her less and less help and support. Gradually she will learn to maintain her balance and sit without relying on anything to rest against.
Teach Your Giant Schnauzer to Sit: Putting It All Together
Throughout all this training the words "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her psyche through constant repetition. Now is the final training to teach your Giant Schnauzer to sit up as quickly as she hears the phrase. Chances are, if she has been diligently instructed, you will just have to get her out into the room, display a snack, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit up or sit" and she'll obey. Then give her the treat while still in place.
The only prerequisite for excellence is to practice with your Giant Schnauzer several times a day until she will sit up when told and without being shown a snack; give her the snacks only once she has obeyed the direction.
Teach Your Giant Schnauzer Other Tricks
You have now the fundamentals for teaching your Giant Schnauzer many other tricks. She can now be taught how to beg by waving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she'll move in coordination with yours. She can also learn to salute by bringing one paw to the side of her head, or to hold a toy in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothing.
While instructing a Giant Schnauzer to tolerate being dressed up, do not try to get her to wear too many clothes at the same time. Try her at first with a cap. Only after she becomes accustomed to that you can put on a jacket and eventually introduce her to the other clothing.
