Tips For Teaching Your Canaan Dog To Sit

Teach Your Canaan Dog to Sit

Are you making an attempt to teach your Canaan Dog to sit? The technique of sitting up is quickly taught to small dogs, though much bigger dogs are another story. It is hard for them to maintain their equilibrium.

Teach Your Canaan Dog to Sit: Groundwork

Sitting is one of the first skills that should be taught to your Canaan Dog and is the groundwork for a number of other tricks. To train a Canaan Dog to sit up, prepare some snacks as a reward, and place your Canaan Dog on her rump in the corner, so she can’t fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no room to stumble.

Teach Your Canaan Dog to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Words

Stop her from tilting to the front by keeping your hand underneath her chin and with the second hand hold the reward above your Canaan Dog’s nose. Keep saying intelligibly and clearly, “sit up.” Don’t make her sit up too long at one time, but do repeat the training often and reward her often with loads of approval and treats.

Teach Your Canaan Dog to Sit: Help Her Maintain Balance

During the very first lesson your Canaan Dog will require quite a bit of support from you to prevent her from falling forward, but as she gets more control of the muscles and knows what you want, she will count less and less on your hand to hold her steady. Then you can gradually give her less assistance till you will just have to keep one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be in position to prevent her falling forward; in the future you might remove your hand altogether and just simply dangle the treat right above the height of your Canaan Dog’s head.

Teach Your Canaan Dog To Sit: Remove the Aids Slowly And Gradually

After consistent practice your Canaan Dog will sit up long after you set her up. Next she should be set against your wall, so as to give her a support for her back. When she has gotten the hang of this and can maintain her position easily, rehearse with her using chair legs, cushions or other items that provide her less and less help. Gradually she will figure out how to keep her stability and sit up without relying on anything to lean against.

Teach Your Canaan Dog to Sit: Putting It All Together

In the course of all this training the command "sit up" will have been instilled upon her mind by means of constant repetition. Now here's the final training to teach your Canaan Dog to sit up as soon as she hears the phrase. It's highly likely, if she has been properly instructed, you will only have to get her out into the room, display a reward, hold it up a reasonable distance from the floor, say "sit up or sit" and she will do so. Then you give her the snack while still in place.

The only prerequisite for flawlessness is to rehearse with her multiple times daily until she sits when told and without being shown a reward; give her the treats only after she has followed the command.

Teach Your Canaan Dog Other Tricks

You have now the method for teaching your Canaan Dog many other skills. She can now learn how to beg by moving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she'll move in sync with yours. She can also learn to salute by moving one paw up to the side of her head, or to keep a toy in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other articles of clothing.

When teaching a Canaan Dog to submit to being clothed, don't try to get her to wear too many items at once. Try at first with just a hat. After she gets used to that you could put on a jacket and over time introduce her to the other clothes.
