Are you aiming to teach your Borzoi to sit? The talent of sitting up is easily taught to very small dogs, but bigger dogs are a different story. It is problematic for them to maintain their equilibrium.
Teach Your Borzoi to Sit: Readiness
Sitting up is one of the very first skills that you should teach to your Borzoi and is the groundwork for lots of other skills. To train a Borzoi to sit up, prep some snacks as a perk, and place your Borzoi on her butt in the corner, to ensure that she is unable to fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no space to stumble.
Teach Your Borzoi to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Sound of The Words
Protect her from pitching forward by keeping 1 hand under her chin and using the second hand hold the treat above her face. Keep saying clearly and intelligibly, “sit.” Do not force her to sit for too long at any one time, but do repeat the lesson often and reward her frequently with loads of adoration and treats.
Teach Your Borzoi to Sit: Help Her Stay Balanced
During her beginner lesson she will demand a lot of support from you to prevent her from pitching forward, but as she gets more control of the balancing muscles and comprehends what you want, she will count less and less upon your hand to keep her steady. Then you can gradually give your Borzoi less support til you’ll simply have to keep one hand in position two or three inches from her chin or neck, to be waiting to stop her from falling forward; in the future you can probably take away the hand completely and merely hold the reward just above the level of your Borzoi’s face.
Teach Your Borzoi To Sit: Remove the Help Gradually Over Time
With consistent practice she will stay seated for a good while after you command her. Next she should be set up against a wall, so as to give her a support for her back only. When she has taken in this and can hold her posture easily, rehearse with her using chair legs, pillows or other objects that provide her less and less support. Eventually she will figure out how to sustain her balance and sit up without needing something to rest against.
Teach Your Borzoi to Sit: Putting It All Together
Throughout all this training the command "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her mind by means of persistent repetition. Lastly is the final training to teach your Borzoi to sit up as quickly as she hears the words. There's a good chance, if she has been carefully instructed, you will merely have to get her out in the room, display a reward, hold it up a reasonable distance from the floor, say "sit up or sit" and she'll obey. Then you give her the treat while still in position.
The only prerequisite for perfection is to practice with your Borzoi several times daily until she sits on command and without being shown a reward; give her the rewards only once she has obeyed the direction.
Teach Your Borzoi Other Tricks
You have now the technique for teaching your Borzoi many other skills. She can now learn how to beg by waving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she'll move in sync with yours. She also can be taught to salute by bringing one paw up to the side of her head, or to keep a toy in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other articles of clothing.
While instructing a Borzoi to submit to being dressed up, do not try to make her wear too many items simultaneously. Try at first with a cap. After she becomes used to that you could put on a coat and progressively introduce her to the other clothing.
