How To Teach Your Phalene To Sit

Teach Your Phalene to Sit

Are you trying to teach your Phalene to sit? The skill of sitting up is easily taught to small dogs, but bigger canines are a different story. It’s problematic for them to sustain their equilibrium.

Teach Your Phalene to Sit: Prep work

Sitting up is one of the first skills that should be taught to your Phalene and provides the ground work for a large number of other techniques. In order to train a Phalene to sit up, prep some treats as a perk, and set the Phalene on her rump in the corner, to ensure she won’t be able to fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no room to stumble.

Teach Your Phalene to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Command

Keep her from tilting to the front by keeping your hand on her chin and using the second hand dangle the snack above the Phalene’s face. Keep saying deliberately and clearly, “sit up.” Do not make her sit up too long at any one time, but repeat the lesson routinely and reward her regularly with a lot of praise and snacks.

Teach Your Phalene to Sit: Help Her Maintain Balance

In the initial lesson your Phalene will demand significant help and support from your hand to prevent her from tumbling forward, but as she gets control of her stabilizing muscles and figures out what you want her to do, she will count less and less on your hand to hold her steady. Gradually, you can give your Phalene less help up until you’ll only have to leave one hand in position two or three inches from her neck or chin, to be available to stop her falling forward; in the future you might remove the hand completely and just simply hold the snack right over the height of her face.

Teach Your Phalene To Sit: Remove the Help Gradually Over Time

With constant practice she will stay seated for a good while after you get her to sit. Then she should be set up against the wall, so as to provide her a support for her back only. Soon after she has understood this and can hold her position easily, rehearse with her against chair legs, cushions or other items that give her less and less support. Gradually she will get the hang of how to keep her balance and sit without anything to lean against.

Teach Your Phalene to Sit: Putting It All Together

Throughout all this training the phrase "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her subconscious with the assistance of constant repetition. Lastly is the final lesson to teach your Phalene to sit up right after she hears the command. There's a good chance, if she has been carefully instructed, you will merely have to summon her out into the room, reveal a treat, hold it up a reasonable distance from the ground, say "sit up or sit" and she will obey. Then give her the treat while still in place.

The only necessity for perfection is to practice with your Phalene several times daily until she sits up when told and without being shown a snack; give her the treats only after she has followed the order.

Teach Your Phalene Other Tricks

You have now the groundwork for teaching your Phalene many other tricks. She now can be taught to beg by moving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she'll move in coordination with yours. She can also learn to salute by bringing one paw to the side of her head, or to hold a wooden pipe in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothes.

While instructing a Phalene to accept being dressed up, don't try to make her wear too many items at the same time. Try at first with a cap. Only after she becomes accustomed to that you can put on a jacket and gradually introduce her to more garments.

Take pleasure in "teaching your Phalene the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun in the process!
