Are you attempting to teach your Black Russian Terrier to sit? The technique of sitting up is easily taught to very small dogs, though much bigger pet dogs are a different story. It’s problematic for them to keep their balance.
Teach Your Black Russian Terrier to Sit: Prep
Sitting up is one of the first techniques that you should teach to a Black Russian Terrier and is the ground work for a number of other tricks. In order to train a Black Russian Terrier to sit up, prepare some treats as a reward, and set the Black Russian Terrier on her haunches in the corner, to ensure she will not fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to stumble.
Teach Your Black Russian Terrier to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Words
Protect her from falling towards you by keeping your hand underneath her chin and using your second hand hold the treat above her nose. Keep repeating distinctly and deliberately, “sit up.” Don’t force her to sit for too long at any one time, however repeat the instruction routinely and reward her often with lots of adoration and snacks.
Teach Your Black Russian Terrier to Sit: Help Her Maintain Balance
In her initial lesson she will require a surprising amount of help from your hand to stop her from falling forward, but as she gains control of the stabilizing muscles and grasps what you want her to do, she will count less upon your hand to keep her steady. Gradually, you can give your Black Russian Terrier less help up until you will basically have to keep one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be waiting to prevent her falling forward; in the future you can most likely take away the hand altogether and just simply dangle the treat right above the level of your Black Russian Terrier’s head.
Teach Your Black Russian Terrier To Sit: Remove the Help Incrementally
After frequent practice she will stay seated well after you command her. Afterward she should be set up against your wall, so as to offer her support for her back only. Soon after she has grasped this and can hold her place effortlessly, practice with her up against chair legs, pillows or other things that provide her less and less support. Subsequently she will understand how to preserve her stability and sit in the absence of something to lean against.
Teach Your Black Russian Terrier to Sit: Putting It All Together
In the course of all this training the words "sit up" will have been instilled upon her psyche through frequent repetition. Now here's the final lesson to teach your Black Russian Terrier to sit up immediately after she hears the phrase. Most likely, if she has been properly trained, you will just have to call her out into the room, display to her a reward, hold it up a suitable distance from the ground, say "sit" and she'll do so. Then you give her the treat while still in place.
The only requirement for perfection is to practice with your Black Russian Terrier several times a day until she sits up on command and without being shown a snack; give her the snacks only once she has followed the order.
Teach Your Black Russian Terrier Other Tricks
You have now the technique for teaching your Black Russian Terrier many other tricks. She can now learn to beg by waving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she'll move in coordination with yours. She also can learn to salute by moving one paw up to the side of her head, or to keep a toy in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other articles of clothing.
In instructing a Black Russian Terrier to submit to being clothed, don't try to get her to wear too many things at one time. Try at first with a cap. Only after she gets accustomed to that you can put on a coat and slowly and gradually introduce her to more clothes.
