How To Train Your Komondor To Sit

Teach Your Komondor to Sit

Are you trying to teach your Komondor to sit? The skill of sitting up is quite easily taught to compact dogs, though larger pooches are another story. It is tricky for them to sustain their equilibrium.

Teach Your Komondor to Sit: Preparation

Sitting up is one of the very first techniques that should be taught to your Komondor and provides the foundation for innumerable other tricks. To train a Komondor to sit up, put together some treats as a perk, and place the Komondor on her haunches in the corner, to make sure that she can’t fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.

Teach Your Komondor to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Command

Protect her from pitching towards you by sticking your hand beneath her chin and using your second hand hold her reward above the Komondor’s face. Keep repeating distinctly and intelligibly, “sit.” Don’t make her sit too long at one time, but do repeat the training regularly and reward her regularly with loads of kudos and treats.

Teach Your Komondor to Sit: Help Her Keep Her Balance

During the very first lesson she will demand a surprising amount of assistance from your hand to prevent her from pitching forward, but as she gains better control of the balancing muscles and comprehends what you want her to do, she’ll depend less on your hand to hold her steady. Gradually, you can give her less assistance until you’ll merely have to keep one hand in position two or three inches from her chin or neck, to be ready to stop her falling forward; eventually you may withdraw your hand and just simply dangle the treat right above the height of your Komondor’s head.

Teach Your Komondor To Sit: Remove the Aids Slowly

With steady training your Komondor will stay seated well after you set her up. Next she should be set up against your wall, so as to offer her support for her back. Only after she has picked up this and can keep her posture easily, practice with her up against chair legs, cushions or other things that give her less and less aid. Gradually she will be able to preserve her balance and sit without something to lean on.

Teach Your Komondor to Sit: Putting It All Together

Throughout all these lessons the command "sit up" will have been instilled upon her mind by means of constant repetition. Last comes the final training to teach your Komondor to sit up right after she hears the phrase. Chances are, if she has been diligently taught, you will merely have to call her out into the room, show her a treat, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit" and she will do so. Then give her the snack while still in position.

The only necessity for excellence is to train with her several times a day until she will sit up on command and without being shown a snack; give her the treats only once she has followed the direction.

Teach Your Komondor Other Tricks

You have now the basis for teaching your Komondor many other tricks. She can now learn to beg by waving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she will move in conjunction with yours. She also can be taught to salute by bringing one paw to the side of her head, or to keep a toy in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other articles of clothing.

In instructing a Komondor to accept being clothed, don't try to get her to wear too many items simultaneously. Try at first with just a hat. After she becomes familiar with that you can put on a coat and slowly introduce her to more clothes.

Take pleasure in "teaching your Komondor the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun in the process!
