To teach your English Springer Spaniel tricks, even easy ones, you should have in hand some tasty snacks, go to a quiet suitable location and try to keep the training sessions to 10 – 15 minutes or the English Springer Spaniel will start to get bored. Take note that when he gets something correct offer him lots of praise and a reward snack, just beware not to get him over fired up or he will lose concentration.
Teach your English Springer Spaniel to give you his paw
To get your English Springer Spaniel to offer you his paw, first get him to sit, then as you say the word ‘paw’ take his paw in your hand and offer him a snack. After that do it again, and after a couple of successful tries don’t take his paw so quickly. Say the word ‘paw’, count to one and then after that take it. You need to see that he is raising his paw upward as you say the word. If he doesn’t then return to saying it at the exact same time. Do it a couple of more times then slow your reaction once again. After a couple of sessions most English Springer Spaniels pick this trick up quite easily.
Teach your English Springer Spaniel to give you a high 5
Like a lot of tricks the high five is a progression of an easier trick, and in this case the paw trick. Place a snack in your fingers and lift your hand a little higher than you’d do for the paw trick. Your English Springer Spaniel will expect you wish to perform the paw trick and will reach for the treat with his paw as we had instructed him in the previous trick. Once he reaches up you state “high 5” and offer him the treat. Once your English Springer Spaniel has actually mastered the paw trick this one should be really simple to learn and with only a couple of sessions he will be performing it from your hand signal rather than voice control.
Teach your English Springer Spaniel to leap through a hoop
Before you begin this 1 I would just like to ask you to be a little reasonable and not suspend the hoop too high up as you do not really want your English Springer Spaniel to harm himself while performing the trick. Place your English Springer Spaniel on one side of a hula hoop, get him to focus on your hand on the other side of the hoop. Place a treat in your hand and offer the English Springer Spaniel the command to stop sitting. At first he may try to go around or below the hula hoop. When this happens begin once again. Your English Springer Spaniel desires the snack and will quickly discover that going around or beneath does not get it done so he’ll soon start going through it. The instant he does, state “hoop” and offer him the treat. He will soon be jumping through the hoop upon the command of “hoop”. When I first started doing this trick I owned a medium sized dog, so I started with the hoop 6 inches from the floor and gradually brought it to waist high. On the occasion that you possess a smaller sized dog you may wish to begin with the hoop on the ground so he just goes through the hoop and then slowly elevate it as he gets used to the trick.
I know you have enjoyed these 3 tricks you can teach your English Springer Spaniel. Have patience with your English Springer Spaniel and most importantly, have fun!
