Ten Tips For Training Your American Bulldog

All of us dream of training the perfect American Bulldog, a pup that’s a CGC or canine good citizen and is well behaved and dependable at all times. Well dreams do come true when the training is done with care and dedication. Realize pups learn from the first day and want to be informed what is correct, what is not, and appropriate interpersonal skills.
Pups are just like children, they really need constant guidance and teaching. Training a pup needn’t be a chore, all you have to think about are a few straightforward guidelines:

Ten Tips For Training Your American Bulldog

  1. Till your pup is trained, you have to keep an eye on him at all times. If you aren’t able to then you need to cage him. Create a routine for the pup, this will serve to help her to settle down quickly. The schedule should incorporate things like hourly bathroom visits, eating times, sleep times, strolls, play time, teaching, and so on. A pup that has a hectic day has no time at all to get unoccupied or misbehave.
  2. Train the pup to appreciate you. American Bulldogs live in packs and instinctively comply with a leader. Once you establish your dominance in no uncertain terms then teaching will come to be easy as the pup will comply with orders at all times and not test your power.
  3. Use exclusively positive training methods. Do not ever shout at, whack, or abuse your American Bulldog. It’s not only harsh but can easily induce behavioral problems. Use of electrical shocks, prong collars, sprays, and so forth may wound the animal.
  4. Show the pup “absolutely nothing in this life is free.” This is a philosophy that is commonly recognized as a very useful coaching tool. If you execute this, the pup will learn that to get something like love, a walk, or treat, he has to act properly.
  5. Show the meaning of “No,” from the first day. Do not advocate behaviors like jumping, growling, tug-o-war, barking, or escaping open gates and doors. Appreciate good behavior and ignore or leave when there is bad conduct. The pup will realize that if he misbehaves he will lose his companion/playmate.
  6. To deal with a behavior you have to catch the American Bulldog in the act and startle her by rattling a jar of stones. When you have done this make him adjust his behavior and immediately give him a treat and approval. American Bulldogs do not remember what happened earlier so chastening him after an event is futile.
  7. Be certain to call/use his name favorably. Never ever say “Bad TOM,” or “No Tom,” this will create mental confusion and the American Bulldog will believe that if you call his name then it is for something negative. The dog must link his name with pleasant times like hugs, petting, walks, treats, and such. If this happens he will approach happily whenever you call his name.
  8. Make a coaching schedule that is short and sweet, say 10 minutes 3 times a day. Extensive repetitive trainings can be boring and the American Bulldog will lose interest in learning. Help make lessons fun-filled and use trick training to demonstrate directions like sit, down, come et cetera.
  9. Connect with the American Bulldog and both of you are going to enjoy your lessons. The pup should anticipate spending quality time with you and not steer clear of you by turning tail or hiding. Make certain to socialize the doggie very early. Socialization is one of the most important lessons. The American Bulldog must learn to exist with other animals, people, sounds, vehicles, and other activities. So, slowly but surely introduce the pup when he is small to common activities and noises. Take him to the shopping mall/ playground, introduce him to children and other animals, and make him unfrightened of the vacuum cleaner and water hose.
  10. Understand all about potty training, leash walking, house breaking, in addition to food training. These are kindergarten lessons that every American Bulldog puppy needs to learn. Know about all the characteristics and peculiarities of the breed. This will give you useful information on how to properly train the dog.

As a American Bulldog parent you have a lot of choices. You may choose to train the American Bulldog by yourself or enlist at a skilled professional training school. Training a American Bulldog has many levels: preschool, behavior training, doggy sports, presenting and conformation, as well as other aspects like therapy dogs, hearing dogs, et cetera. What degree you choose to coach is dependent on you in addition to the learning abilities of your American Bulldog. As you know, different dogs, like people, possess different talents. Choose wisely and both you and your American Bulldog pup will have fun times together.
