Are you working to teach your Posavac Hound to sit? The talent of sitting up is quite easily taught to little dogs, however much larger pooches are a different story. It’s tricky for them to maintain their equilibrium.
Teach Your Posavac Hound to Sit: Preparing
Sitting up is one of the very first tricks that you should teach to your Posavac Hound and forms the ground work for many other skills. In order to train a Posavac Hound to sit up, prep some treats as a perk, and set your Posavac Hound on her haunches in a corner, to ensure she will not fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.
Teach Your Posavac Hound to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Words
Prevent her from falling forward by maintaining one hand underneath her chin and using the second hand hold the treat above your Posavac Hound’s face. Keep saying clearly and intelligibly, “sit.” Do not make her sit for too long at any one time, but do repeat the lesson routinely and reward her regularly with loads of approval and treats.
Teach Your Posavac Hound to Sit: Help Her Stay Balanced
During the first lesson she will demand considerable support from your hand to prevent her from falling forward, but as she gains control of the balancing muscles and understands what you want her to do, she will depend less on your hand to keep her in position. Then you can gradually give her less assistance til you’ll basically have to leave one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be in place to stop her falling forward; in the future you can probably take away your hand entirely and just hold the treat just over the level of her head.
Teach Your Posavac Hound To Sit: Remove the Assistance Gradually
With frequent training your Posavac Hound will sit up for a long time after you tell her to. Next she should be set up against your wall, so as to give her a support for her back. Soon after she has mastered this and can maintain her posture easily, rehearse with her using chair legs, pillows or other things that provide her less and less aid. Sooner or later she will grasp how to preserve her balance and sit without something to lean against.
Teach Your Posavac Hound to Sit: Putting It All Together
In the course of all these lessons the command "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her psyche by persistent repetition. Lastly comes the final training to teach your Posavac Hound to sit up whenever she hears the phrase. Most likely, if she has been properly instructed, you will merely have to summon her out into the room, show her a treat, hold it up a reasonable distance from the floor, say "sit up or sit" and she'll obey. Then you give her the reward while still in place.
The only requirement for flawlessness is to rehearse with your Posavac Hound several times a day until she can sit on command and without being shown a snack; give her the rewards only after she has adhered to the order.
Teach Your Posavac Hound Other Tricks
You have now the fundamentals for teaching your Posavac Hound many other skills. She now can be taught to beg by moving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she will move in coordination with yours. She can also be taught to salute by moving one paw up to the side of her head, or to keep an object in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothes.
In training a Posavac Hound to tolerate being clothed, don't try to get her to wear too many clothes at the same time. Try at first with just a hat. Only after she gets adjusted to that you can put on a coat and little by little introduce her to more garments.
