Teach Your Poodle to Sit: Readiness

Sitting up is one of the fundamental tricks that should be taught to your Poodle and is the foundation for several other skills. In order to train a Poodle to sit up, prep some treats as a reward, and place the Poodle on her rump in a corner, to ensure she won’t fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.

Teach Your Poodle to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Sound of The Words

Protect her from tilting to the front by holding one hand underneath her chin and with the other hand hold her snack above the Poodle’s face. Keep saying intelligibly and distinctly, “sit.” Don’t make her sit up for too long at one time, however repeat the training routinely and reward her often with loads of kudos and treats.

Teach Your Poodle to Sit: Help Her Keep Her Balance

In the initial lesson she will need a surprising amount of help from your hand to stop her from tumbling forward, but as she gets better control of her stabilizing muscles and grasps what you want, she’ll depend less and less on your hand to keep her steady. Then you can gradually give your Poodle less support up until you will basically have to maintain one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her chin or neck, to be in position to stop her from falling forward; later you can most likely withdraw the hand altogether and simply dangle the treat just over the level of your Poodle’s head.

Teach Your Poodle To Sit: Remove the Aids Progressively

After steady training your Poodle will stay seated for a long time after you make her. Next she should be set up against your wall, so as to offer her assistance for her back only. Soon after she has picked up this and can hold her position effortlessly, practice with her up against chair legs, pillows or other objects that give her less and less help and support. At some point she will figure out how to sustain her stability and sit without needing anything to rest against.

Teach Your Poodle to Sit: Putting It All Together

During the course of all this training the words "sit up" will have been instilled upon her subconscious with the assistance of persistent repetition. Now comes the final lesson to teach your Poodle to sit up as soon as she hears the phrase. It's highly likely, if she has been diligently taught, you will just have to call her out in the room, reveal a treat, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit" and she will obey. Then you'll just give her the snack while still in place.

The only criteria for perfection is to train with her several times daily until she can sit when commanded to and without being shown a snack; give her the treats only once she has followed the order.

Teach Your Poodle Other Tricks

You have now the basis for teaching your Poodle many other tricks. She can now be taught how to beg by waving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she'll move in sync with yours. She also can be taught to salute by moving one paw to the side of her head, or to hold an object in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other articles of clothing.

In instructing a Poodle to accept being dressed up, don't try to make her wear too many items at the same time. Try her at first with a hat. Once she gets familiar with that you could put on a coat and gradually over time introduce her to more clothes.
