Teaching Your Polish Hunting Dog To Sit

Teach Your Polish Hunting Dog to Sit

Are you trying to teach your Polish Hunting Dog to sit? The skill of sitting up is easily taught to compact dogs, but much bigger dogs are another story. It’s problematic for them to maintain their balance.

Teach Your Polish Hunting Dog to Sit: Anticipation

Sitting is one of the very first techniques that you should teach to your Polish Hunting Dog and lays the groundwork for lots of other techniques. To train a Polish Hunting Dog to sit up, put together some snacks as a reward, and set the Polish Hunting Dog on her rump in the corner, to ensure that she is unable to fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.

Teach Your Polish Hunting Dog to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Sound of The Words

Stop her from pitching towards you by keeping your hand underneath her chin and using the second hand hold her snack above your Polish Hunting Dog’s nose. Keep repeating distinctly and deliberately, “sit up.” Don’t make her sit up for too long at one time, but do repeat the instruction regularly and reward her often with plenty of recognition and treats.

Teach Your Polish Hunting Dog to Sit: Help Her Balance

In her 1st lesson your Polish Hunting Dog will call for quite a bit of support from you to keep her from pitching forward, but as she gets more control of her balancing muscles and starts to understand what you want her to do, she will depend less upon your hand to hold her steady. Then you can gradually give your Polish Hunting Dog less support till you will only have to leave one hand in position two or three inches from her chin or neck, to be in place to stop her from falling forward; in the future you might take away this hand and simply suspend the treat right over the level of your Polish Hunting Dog’s face.

Teach Your Polish Hunting Dog To Sit: Remove the Assistance Over Time

After constant training she will stay seated for a good while after you tell her to. Afterward she should be set against the wall, so as to provide her a support for her back. Only after she has picked up this and can keep her posture effortlessly, practice with her up against chair legs, cushions or other items that offer her less and less help. Subsequently she will get the hang of how to sustain her equilibrium and sit in the absence of anything to lean on.

Teach Your Polish Hunting Dog to Sit: Putting It All Together

During the course of all this training the phrase "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her mind by persistent repetition. Last comes the final training to teach your Polish Hunting Dog to sit up as soon as she hears the command. It's highly likely, if she has been carefully trained, you will just have to get her out into the room, display a snack, hold it up a suitable distance from the ground, say "sit" and she'll do so. Then you'll just give her the reward while still in place.

The only requirement for perfection is to train with her several times a day until she sits when told and without being shown a snack; give her the snacks only once she has obeyed the direction.

Teach Your Polish Hunting Dog Other Tricks

You have now the groundwork for teaching your Polish Hunting Dog many other skills. She can now be taught to beg by waving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she will move in coordination with yours. She can also learn to salute by bringing one paw to the side of her head, or to keep a wooden pipe in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other clothing.

In instructing a Polish Hunting Dog to accept being dressed up, do not try to make her wear too many garments at one time. Try at first with just a cap. Only after she gets adjusted to that you could put on a jacket and steadily introduce her to more garments.

Take joy in "teaching your Polish Hunting Dog the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun in the process!
