How To Train Your Russell Terrier To Sit

Teach Your Russell Terrier to Sit

Are you working to teach your Russell Terrier to sit? The talent of sitting up is regularly taught to pocket-sized dogs, though bigger pooches are another story. It’s tough for them to keep their equilibrium.

Teach Your Russell Terrier to Sit: Groundwork

Sitting up is one of the first skills that should be taught to your Russell Terrier and lays the groundwork for lots of other skills. In order to train a Russell Terrier to sit up, prep some treats as a perk, and set the Russell Terrier on her haunches in a corner, to ensure that she can’t fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.

Teach Your Russell Terrier to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Phrase

Protect her from falling to the front by maintaining 1 hand under her chin and using your other hand dangle her treat above her nose. Keep saying distinctly and intelligibly, “sit.” Do not force her to sit up for too long at any one time, but repeat the training regularly and reward her frequently with loads of approval and snacks.

Teach Your Russell Terrier to Sit: Help Her Maintain Balance

Throughout her very first lesson she will require significant help and support from you to prevent her from falling forward, but as she gets more control of her muscles and sees what you want, she’ll count less upon your hand to keep her in position. Gradually, you can give her less help until you’ll merely have to keep one hand in position two or three inches from her neck or chin, to be available to prevent her falling forward; later you might withdraw this hand entirely and merely dangle the snack just over the height of her face.

Teach Your Russell Terrier To Sit: Remove the Help Progressively

After steady practice she will sit up for a long time after you command her. The next step is she should be set against the wall, so as to provide her support for her back only. Once she has grasped this and can keep her place effortlessly, practice with her using chair legs, cushions or other things that offer her less and less support. In time she will learn how to preserve her stability and sit without relying on anything to rest against.

Teach Your Russell Terrier to Sit: Putting It All Together

Throughout all these lessons the words "sit up" will have been instilled upon her mind through constant repetition. Now is the final training to teach your Russell Terrier to sit up as soon as she hears the command. There's a great chance, if she has been diligently instructed, you will merely have to call her out into the room, display to her a treat, hold it up a suitable distance from the floor, say "sit up" and she will obey. Then you give her the snack while still in place.

The only condition for excellence is to train with her several times a day until she will sit up on command and without being shown a reward; give her the treats only after she has obeyed the command.

Teach Your Russell Terrier Other Tricks

You have now the foundation for teaching your Russell Terrier many other skills. She can now learn to beg by moving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she'll move in coordination with yours. She can also learn to salute by moving one paw to the side of her head, or to hold an object in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other articles of clothing.

In training a Russell Terrier to tolerate being dressed up, don't try to make her wear too many clothes simultaneously. Try at first with just a hat. After she gets adjusted to that you can put on a coat and gradually introduce her to more clothes.

Delight in "teaching your Russell Terrier the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun in the process!
