Teaching Your Polish Hound To Sit

Teach Your Polish Hound to Sit

Are you attempting to teach your Polish Hound to sit? The talent of sitting up is regularly taught to very small dogs, however bigger pet dogs are a different story. It is challenging for them to sustain their equilibrium.

Teach Your Polish Hound to Sit: Prep

Sitting up is one of the initial skills that should be taught to a Polish Hound and lays the foundation for a large number of other techniques. To train a Polish Hound to sit up, prepare some treats as a perk, and set your Polish Hound on her rump in a corner, to make sure that she will not fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no space to stumble.

Teach Your Polish Hound to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Phrase

Stop her from falling to the front by holding 1 hand under her chin and with the other hand hold the treat above her nose. Keep saying deliberately and clearly, “sit.” Don’t make her sit up for too long at one time, but do repeat the instruction often and reward her regularly with lots of appreciation and snacks.

Teach Your Polish Hound to Sit: Help Her Maintain Balance

In her initial lesson your Polish Hound will need quite a bit of support from you to stop her from tumbling forward, but as she gains more control of the stabilizing muscles and understands what you want her to do, she’ll depend less and less upon your hand to keep her in position. Then you can gradually give her less support until you will just have to keep one hand in position two or three inches from her chin or neck, to be set to stop her from falling forward; eventually you will be able to withdraw this hand and just hold the treat right over the level of your Polish Hound’s face.

Teach Your Polish Hound To Sit: Remove the Aids Gradually

With steady practice she will sit up for a long time after you set her up. The next step is she should be set against a wall, so as to offer her a support for her back. After she has gotten the hang of this and can hold her posture easily, practice with her using chair legs, cushions or other things that give her less and less support. Eventually she will be able to sustain her balance and sit up without needing anything to lean on.

Teach Your Polish Hound to Sit: Putting It All Together

During the course of all this training the words "sit up" will have been ingrained upon her mind by frequent repetition. Lastly here's the final lesson to teach your Polish Hound to sit up as quickly as she hears the words. Most likely, if she has been diligently taught, you will just have to call her out in the room, reveal a treat, hold it up a suitable distance from the ground, say "sit up" and she will obey. Then just give her the reward while still in place.

The only necessity for excellence is to practice with her several times daily until she sits up on command and without being shown a snack; give her the rewards only after she has complied with the command.
