Teach Your Norfolk Spaniel to Sit

Are you making an attempt to teach your Norfolk Spaniel to sit? The skill of sitting up is regularly taught to petite dogs, yet bigger pet dogs are a different story. It is problematic for them to maintain their equilibrium.

Teach Your Norfolk Spaniel to Sit: Foundation

Sitting is one of the fundamental skills that you should teach to your Norfolk Spaniel and is the ground work for various other skills. In order to train a Norfolk Spaniel to sit up, put together some snacks as a reward, and put the Norfolk Spaniel on her haunches in a corner, to ensure she won’t be able to fall either aft or sideways and has very little or no room to stumble.

Teach Your Norfolk Spaniel to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Words

Keep her from pitching forward by holding 1 hand beneath her chin and with the other hand hold her treat above her face. Keep repeating clearly and deliberately, “sit up.” Don’t force her to sit up too long at one time, but do repeat the lesson often and reward her frequently with plenty of adoration and snacks.

Teach Your Norfolk Spaniel to Sit: Help Her Keep Her Balance

During her 1st lesson she will need significant support from your hand to prevent her from pitching forward, but as she gains better control of the muscles and grasps what you want, she will count less and less upon your hand to hold her steady. Gradually, you can give her less support up until you’ll basically have to maintain one hand in position two or three inches from her neck or chin, to be prepared to stop her falling forward; eventually you may remove your hand completely and just simply hold the treat right above the level of your Norfolk Spaniel’s head.

After consistent practice she will stay seated well after you make her. Then she should be set against a wall, so as to give her a support for her back only. Only after she has picked up this and can hold her place effortlessly, rehearse with her using chair legs, cushions or other things that provide her less and less aid. Gradually she will be able to keep her balance and sit without having anything to lean against.

Teach Your Norfolk Spaniel to Sit: Putting It All Together

In the course of all these lessons the phrase "sit up" will have been impressed upon her psyche by means of frequent repetition. Lastly comes the final lesson to teach your Norfolk Spaniel to sit up right after she hears the command. It's highly likely, if she has been properly instructed, you will merely have to call her out in the room, reveal a snack, hold it up a reasonable distance from the floor, say "sit up" and she will do so. Then you give her the reward while still in place.

The only necessity for excellence is to practice with her multiple times daily until she can sit when commanded to and without being shown a snack; give her the treats only once she has followed the command.

Teach Your Norfolk Spaniel Other Tricks

You have now the foundation for teaching your Norfolk Spaniel many other tricks. She can now learn how to beg by waving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she will move in coordination with yours. She also can be taught to salute by moving one paw to the side of her head, or to keep an object in her mouth, or to wear a cap on her head or wear other articles of clothing.

When instructing a Norfolk Spaniel to tolerate being dressed up, do not try to make her wear too many things simultaneously. Try her at first with a hat. Only after she gets adjusted to that you can put on a coat and incrementally introduce her to more clothing.
