Teaching Your Lowchen To Sit

Teach Your Lowchen to Sit

Are you working to teach your Lowchen to sit? The technique of sitting up is easily taught to small dogs, though larger doggies are a different story. It is tough for them to keep their balance.

Teach Your Lowchen to Sit: Prep

Sitting up is one of the most basic techniques that you should teach to your Lowchen and lays the ground work for a number of other skills. To train a Lowchen to sit up, prepare some snacks as a perk, and place the Lowchen on her haunches in the corner, to make sure that she can’t fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.

Teach Your Lowchen to Sit: Familiarize Her With The Words

Protect her from falling towards you by maintaining one hand beneath her chin and using the other hand hold the reward above the Lowchen’s nose. Keep saying distinctly and deliberately, “sit.” Do not make her sit up too long at one time, but repeat the training regularly and reward her frequently with plenty of praise and snacks.

Teach Your Lowchen to Sit: Help Her Balance

During her beginner lesson your Lowchen will demand a lot of help from you to prevent her from falling forward, but as she gets control of the balancing muscles and starts to understand what you want her to do, she’ll count less and less upon your hand to hold her steady. Gradually, you can give her less help up until you’ll simply have to keep one hand in position two or three inches from her neck or chin, to be in place to stop her falling forward; in the future you may remove the hand entirely and merely dangle the reward right over the height of her face.

Teach Your Lowchen To Sit: Remove the Assistance Incrementally

With regular training she will stay seated for a good while after you make her. Afterward she should be set up against the wall, so as to provide her assistance for her back. Once she has learned this and can hold her place effortlessly, rehearse with her up against chair legs, pillows or other things that offer her less and less help and support. Gradually she will get the hang of how to keep her stability and sit up without something to lean against.

Teach Your Lowchen to Sit: Putting It All Together

During the course of all these lessons the words "sit up" will have been instilled upon her subconscious with the assistance of regular repetition. Now comes the final training to teach your Lowchen to sit up as soon as she hears the phrase. Most likely, if she has been diligently trained, you will merely have to get her out in the room, show a reward, hold it up a reasonable distance from the ground, say "sit up" and she'll obey. Then you give her the treat while still in position.

The only prerequisite for flawlessness is to practice with her several times daily until she will sit up when told and without being shown a reward; give her the snacks only after she has obeyed the order.

Teach Your Lowchen Other Tricks

You have now the foundation for teaching your Lowchen many other tricks. She now can learn how to beg by moving your hand up and down in front of her paws, which she'll move in rhythm with yours. She can also be taught to salute by moving one paw to the side of her head, or to hold a wooden pipe in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothing.

While teaching a Lowchen to submit to being clothed, don't try to get her to wear too many garments at once. Try at first with just a cap. Once she becomes familiar with that you could put on a coat and slowly and gradually introduce her to more clothes.

Appreciate "teaching your Lowchen the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun in the process!
