Are you aspiring to teach your English Toy Terrier to sit? The talent of sitting up is easily taught to smaller dogs, but larger doggies are another story. It’s hard for them to sustain their equilibrium.

Teach Your English Toy Terrier to Sit: Foundation

Sitting up is one of the very first tricks that you should teach to your English Toy Terrier and provides the foundation for innumerable other tricks. To train a English Toy Terrier to sit up, prepare some treats as a reward, and place the English Toy Terrier on her butt in a corner, to ensure that she will not fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no space to lose balance.

Teach Your English Toy Terrier to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Phrase

Stop her from tilting forward by securing one hand beneath her chin and with the second hand dangle her reward above your English Toy Terrier’s face. Keep repeating clearly and deliberately, “sit up.” Do not make her sit up for too long at any one time, but do repeat the instruction regularly and reward her often with plenty of kudos and treats.

Teach Your English Toy Terrier to Sit: Help Her Balance

Throughout her 1st lesson she will call for quite a bit of assistance from you to keep her from tumbling forward, but as she gets control of her stabilizing muscles and figures out what you want her to do, she’ll count less and less on your hand to hold her in position. Gradually, you can give her less help up until you’ll merely have to keep one hand in position 2 or 3 inches from her neck or chin, to be set to prevent her falling forward; later you can probably withdraw your hand altogether and simply suspend the reward right above the level of her face.

Teach Your English Toy Terrier To Sit: Remove the Help Slowly

After regular practice your English Toy Terrier will stay seated long after you set her up. Next she should be set against the wall, so as to give her support for her back. Soon after she has picked up this and can maintain her position effortlessly, practice with her against chair legs, cushions or other things that give her less and less help. Subsequently she will figure out how to keep her stability and sit up in the absence of anything to rest against.
