Teaching Your Combai To Sit

Teach Your Combai to Sit

Are you working to teach your Combai to sit? The skill of sitting up is easily taught to petite dogs, yet much larger doggies are another story. It’s tricky for them to sustain their balance.

Teach Your Combai to Sit: Planning

Sitting up is one of the 1st techniques that should be taught to a Combai and forms the foundation for quite a few other techniques. In order to train a Combai to sit up, prepare some treats as a perk, and put your Combai on her butt in the corner, to make sure that she can not fall either backward or sideways and has very little or no room to lose balance.

Teach Your Combai to Sit: Acquaint Her With The Sound of The Words

Stop her from tilting towards you by sticking 1 hand under her chin and using the second hand dangle her treat above her face. Keep repeating clearly and intelligibly, “sit.” Do not force her to sit too long at any one time, however repeat the lesson often and reward her often with lots of appreciation and snacks.

Teach Your Combai to Sit: Help Her Balance

During her first lesson she will call for quite a bit of help and support from your hand to stop her from pitching forward, but as she gets control of the stabilizing muscles and realizes what you want her to do, she’ll depend less and less on your hand to hold her in position. Then you can gradually give her less help and support til you’ll basically have to leave one hand in position two or three inches from her neck or chin, to be in place to stop her falling forward; in the future you can most likely take away the hand completely and simply suspend the treat just over the height of your Combai’s face.

Teach Your Combai To Sit: Remove the Aids Slowly And Gradually

With consistent practice she will sit up long after you tell her to. Next she should be set up against the wall, so as to provide her a support for her back only. Soon after she has picked up this and can keep her posture effortlessly, rehearse with her using chair legs, pillows or other objects that give her less and less help. At some point she will understand how to preserve her stability and sit up without having something to rest on.

Teach Your Combai to Sit: Putting It All Together

During the course of all these lessons the phrase "sit up" will have been instilled upon her subconscious by means of persistent repetition. Last comes the final training to teach your Combai to sit up as soon as she hears the words. There's a great chance, if she has been properly instructed, you will only have to summon her out into the room, display to her a reward, hold it up a reasonable distance from the floor, say "sit" and she'll do so. Then you'll just give her the snack while still in position.

The only condition for perfection is to train with her multiple times daily until she can sit when commanded to and without being shown a treat; give her the snacks only after she has complied with the direction.

Teach Your Combai Other Tricks

You have now the groundwork for teaching your Combai many other skills. She can now be taught how to beg by moving your hand up and down just in front of her paws, which she will move in conjunction with yours. She can also be taught to salute by bringing one paw to the side of her head, or to hold something in her mouth, or to wear a hat on her head or wear other clothes.

While training a Combai to submit to being dressed up, don't try to make her wear too many clothes at one time. Try at first with a cap. Once she becomes familiar with that you could put on a coat and incrementally introduce her to the other clothing.

Take pleasure in "teaching your Combai the sit up trick" and most importantly have fun at the same time!
